DIGGING IN: SUPER 60 REVELATIONS AND RISERS

The collective talent at the 15th Annual Super 60 was impressive, especially given it was early February. Already, National Supervisor Nathan Rode wrote about his personal highlights, in addition to our first PBR Podcast that covered the Super 60 at length.

Here, I look at my personal revelations from several individual performances on Sunday. By no means is this my list of the best players at the event, though many of the below names would certainly be in there. No, this list consists of players who surprised, improved, emerged to the fore, flew under the radar, etc.

THE RODE SHOW: SUPER 60 HIGHLIGHTS

Sunday marked the 2017 Super 60, the 15th edition of one of Prep Baseball Report’s flagship events. There were 100 scouts on hand to see some of the top 2017s from our coverage area, as well as top 2018 OF Jarred Kelenic(Waukesha West HS, WI). The Super 60 is an unofficial kickoff to the spring season as college baseball and some high schools will start playing games in the coming days.

They are getting younger and younger, these Division I recruits. And where it will stop no one knows.

While no one seems to agree on what started the process, it is known that the late Joe Paterno made it fashionable years ago to all but sew up classes of juniors in football for Penn State leading up to national signing day for seniors. Title IX also had a hand when it was mandated that colleges offer equal athletic opportunities for female and male participants. Even to this day, certain colleges struggle to find enough female participants to fill scholarship opportunities, which is quite the opposite in male sports, and offers have been flying off the shelves to young women even before they enrolled in high school.

Chances at free educations also remain as large of a factor as any, but above all, college recruiters have been locked in a sort of arms race. Fearful of falling behind and discarding any age or sense of ethical approach, the race continues. Read More >>
