Prep Baseball Report is proud to announce Sean Campbell as the new MLB Draft League Executive Director. With more than two decades of professional baseball experience as a player, coach, scout and senior director, Campbell brings a wealth of knowledge and innovation to the MLB Draft League, which begins its second season on June 2.

A proven leader and visionary, Campbell’s high-level experiences will help build off an unprecedented successful inaugural season that saw nearly 100 prospects sign professional contracts last year.

“Sean Campbell is a first-class winner and leader, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the team,” said Prep Baseball Report President Sean Duncan. “He’s smart, forward-thinking and, no matter his previous accomplishments, it’s always been about bettering the game of baseball, with a sharp focus on talent identification, which is what this league is ultimately all about.”

Campbell, who replaces Kerrick Jackson as the league’s executive director, worked for the San Diego Padres for over five years, first serving as the Northeast Regional Supervisor before being promoted to National Crosschecker for the final two drafts of his tenure. Prior to joining the Padres, he worked with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an area scout in his home state of California for five years, starting in 2005.

In the winter of 2015, Campbell joined USA Baseball as the Senior Director of Sport Development. During his time at USA Baseball, he created and launched the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) for the top amateur prospects. Additionally, he provided input on National Team selection processes, spearheaded the growth and transformation of the Fun at Bat program, Coach Education and Certification Programs, the Long-Term Athlete Development Plan (LTAD), among other development and health/safety initiatives.  Per the Sports Fitness Industry Association, over his tenure as Senior Director of Sport Development at USA Baseball, youth participation rose by nearly 2,000,000 participants.

Following his days at USA Baseball, Campbell served as a consultant to the Major League Baseball Players Association. Later, he co-founded Loden Sports, which captures and processes human performance data for talent identification, athlete development and keeping athletes healthy.

“I am honored and excited to build upon the successes of the first season and have a hand in shaping the MLB Draft League into the preeminent summer league for draft-eligible prospects,” said Campbell. “This league is an incredible opportunity for players, and I look forward to positively impacting the league to make it a first-class experience for players, coaches, scouts and fans alike.”

A standout catcher at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Campbell was drafted by the Padres in the ninth-round of the 1998 draft. After injuries cut his playing career short, Campbell retired and began teaching special education and coaching high school prior to becoming a professional scout.

Now, Campbell will bring his vast baseball experiences to the MLB Draft League, powered by Prep Baseball Report. MLB Draft League is the only summer league in the country focused on top prospects across all amateur levels who are eligible to be drafted by MLB Clubs that summer.  With the MLB Draft moved back to July and being held as part of All-Star Week, draft-eligible players will have a unique opportunity to showcase their abilities and gain exposure to MLB Clubs and fans next summer.

MLB Draft League participants receive unprecedented visibility to MLB scouts through both in-person observation and state-of-the-art scouting technology, and educational programming designed to prepare them for careers as professional athletes. The league is free to participate.

Campbell will also be spearheading an expanded format, moving from 68 to 80 games, and other changes to enhance the player, fan and scout experience. The 2022 season will be split into two halves with the first half set to begin Thursday, June 2, and concluding Saturday, July 16. The first half will feature amateur, draft-eligible players and will follow a similar format to last year’s season. Following a midseason break to coincide with the MLB All-Star break, the second half will run from Friday, July 22, and conclude Tuesday, Sept. 6, with the MLB Draft League’s first Championship Game.

The second half will feature professional players who have exhausted their amateur eligibility or otherwise wish to begin their professional careers.
