EAST CAROLINA

East Carolina left with a sour taste in its mouth after losing 8-6 and 7-4 in recent scrimmages to Virginia, even though the Pirates were without top arms Jake Kuchmaner and Tyler Smith plus Alec Burleson and Ryder Giles (two-way players who are shut down on the mound this fall).

Flame-throwing righthander Gavin Williams started the first game Sunday and came out of the chute with an electric fastball, sitting 96-97 mph in a seven-pitch first inning.
