Prospect Review: South Carolina

Prospects notes of the Gamecocks by Aaron Fitt of D1Baseball during his travels around the country this fall.

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina’s biggest addition, so to speak, is the return of Carmen Mlodzinski, whose season-ending broken foot during the Clemson series last March dealt the Gamecocks a massive blow before they even got to conference play. Mlodzinski has some of the most electric stuff in college baseball, and he showed off that stuff as well as superb control during a dazzling summer in the Cape Cod League, posting a 40-4 K-BB mark and a 2.14 ERA in 29.1 innings. He showed no ill effects from his injury over the summer, pitching at 92-94 and touching 96 with late life, along a wipeout power breaking ball in the low 80s with tight spin.

Sophomore righthander Brett Kerry is expected to team with Mlodzinski to form a potentially dominant one-two punch atop the rotation. His fastball command and putaway breaking ball are his bread and butter, and he’ll continue to work on developing...
