Prospect Take-aways from Game 163

Throughout the Recruiting Essentials blog, we are working to update players and parents on rules, news, and notes in the world of recruiting.  We have touched on what evaluators may be looking for in different positions and how a scout may dissect a swing or a pitcher’s mechanics.  There are a number of topics we will continue to work to cover, but watching the game 163’s yesterday, October 1st, I realized there are some things players and families can take away from playoff baseball at the MLB level.

3 Take-Aways From Game 163 for Recruits

1.  There is a switch and better players can flip it.

The Cubs – Brewers game was an unbelievable watch.  Yelich and Baez each staking their claim to the MVP and each working to put their team in a position to win a division title.  Both players have played an at unbelievable level throughout the year, but when we talk about players being able to “flip the switch” and elevate their game, sometimes we are talking about great players just being great in primetime.  Yelich and Baez fit this description.

We can also talk about Josh Hader, closing the game for the Brewers, throwing his four hardest fastballs of the year in the outing.  Think about that… after 162 games, without a day off from their final series of the year, one of the most utilized relief men in baseball, who struggled some with command and velocity in his final month, found another gear and elevated his game.  The crowd, the situation, and a pennant being on the line can aid in this elevation of stuff, but there is an ability in good players to flip the switch in key moments.
