Qualls Shows 'Advanced Defensive Abilities'

AMHERST - Josh Qualls was a pitcher in his younger days..

“When other guys got bigger, I transferred to shortstop,” Qualls said.

Now the Amherst Steele junior is a promising college recruit at the premier position in the infield.

“I’m a big fan of Josh,” noted Jordan Chiero, PBR Ohio Director of Scouting. “Arguably the hardest thing to find in the state of Ohio is a guy that has a chance to play shortstop at the next level and I'm confident Josh can do that. With his advanced defensive abilities, he's a type of guy who can win you ball games regardless of what he does at the plate.”

Improved size has the third-rated uncommitted shortstop in Ohio bettering the other areas of his game in order to help impress those at the next level.

“I’ve started working out in the weight room more, running more, training more,” explained Qualls. “I’ve put on 10 to 15 pounds.”

That has the 5-9 155-pounder gaining strength and attracting interest from colleges.

“Before this whole thing with the virus started, I went to a few camps and some showcases with PBR and was reaching out to coaches,” Qualls reflected. “But no high school season hurt a lot.”

The missed exposure prevented an up-close look at the 49th-ranked 2021 in Ohio, who feels there is plenty he can bring to a college program.

“I’m a hard worker and a leader in the infield,” Qualls said. “I’m passionate about the game.”

The strong desire to excel has Qualls working hard to improve his bat.

“Hitting-wise, I can contribute at the next level,” Qualls pointed out. “I’ll do whatever a coach tells me to do, situational stuff or whatever it takes on the field. I’m always willing to learn.”

Chiero sees the 17-year-old making strides at the plate.
