Recruiting Essentials Mailbag: Walk-Ons And Transferring Schools

With the end of the fall season at most college baseball programs and post-fall coach-player meetings taking place we've seen an influx in questions related to the process of transferring schools. Today we take a look at one of these questions a parent submitted.

My son is currently at an NCAA DI school, but has decided for a variety of reasons he wants to transfer to his “dream school” also a DI school. He’s a walk on and is on the team now and made the cut for the spring roster. How do we determine if he was a “recruited walk-on” or not to see if he would be eligible to play right away? When can he begin to contact the coaches at the other school? Making the team at the “dream school” might be a long shot but he’s pretty set on going there, even if it is just for school. Any guidance on this would be appreciated.
