Spring Break Notebook: York County Slugfest Day 1

PBR was on hand for Day 1 of the York County Slugfest, hosted at York Comprehensive HS in South Carolina.  The day featured 4 games and 8 teams that would compete for 3 consecutive days during the spring break week.  Day 1 was on Tuesday April 12, with the championship day scheduled for Thursday April 14th.

Uwharrie Charter (NC) - 1 Northwestern - 16

This game was over just about as it started.  Trojan leadoff hitter Michael Gibson led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer to right, setting an early tone.  The Trojans poured it on, scoring 12 runs before an out was recorded.  

Owen Sarna worked the 1st two innings, throwing up two zeroes, and gaining the win.  The day ended with the 15 run rule evoked in the 3rd ast Finley Polk lifted a ball into the jet stream to right, scoring three with the home run.

For the week, Northwestern would go 2-1 on the week.  They would lose to Clover on Day 2 and then beat Lincoln Charter (NC) on day 3.  

 

 

 

 

South Pointe (SC) - 2 Clover - 7

A tight game for most of the contest, Clover pulled away in the 6th, plating 3 to earn the win.  Clover was led at the plate by Justin Skinnell with 3 hits, including a double.  On the mound River Joye worked into the 6th inning, giving up 2 runs while striking out 5.  

South Pointe’s Redden Smith took the loss, tossing 4 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4.  Joshua Jackson had two hits for the Stallions, including a solo homerun.

South Pointe would go 1-2 on the week with a loss to Fox Creek on day 2 and a win vs. Uwharrie Charter on the final day.  Clover took home the championship for the week, going 3-0, outsourcing South Pointe, Northwestern and York by a combined 25-6.

Lincoln Charter (NC) - 12 Rock Hill - 8

Lincoln Charter jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the 1st and did not look back.  The Eagles added 5 runs in the top of the 7th to pull away and lead 12-4 entering the final half frame.

Charlie Howland earned the win going 5.2 innings and scattering 12 hits, making several big pitches to get out of jams.  Matt Cipriano picked up the save, closing the game.  Offensively five different Eagles had multi-hit games with Tyler Steele going 2-5 with a double and triple.  Mason Smith had 2 hits, one a homerun that put the game away in the 7th.

Rock Hill was paced by John Wimmer at the plate with 3 hits, including a double.  Four Bear Cat hitters had 3 hits.  Cole Canty knocked in 4 on the day.  Max Gladstone worked 5 innings in the loss.

Fox Creek - 0 York - 2


York’s Landon Sexton worked 6.2 innings and Hunter Latham faced the final hitter of the game as the two arms combined on the shutou.  York plated runs in the 2nd and 3rd and the defense allowed them to stand up.


In the bottom of the 2nd, a 2 out Latham single was followed by a HBP and wild pitch, moving runners to 2nd and 3rd.  Ashton Edington used an infield single to plate Lathem for the early lead.  The next frame saw York add on with a steal of 3B getting away enough for Trace Thompson to come home.


Sexton worked in and out of some jams but made pitches in situations with runners in scoring position to keep Fox Creek off the board.  In the 7th, he struckout the 1st two hitters of the inning, running his fastball up to 86 in the frame.  An infield single and two walks put the tying run in scoring position and brought Latham to the mound.  Four pitches later Latham had a strikeout and a save.
