State Games of NC Notebook: Workout Day

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The Powerade State Games of North Carolina features some of the best players from across the state playing at one venue for a week.  The state is split into 8 regions and each region has high school coaches from their region select a 20 man roster. On Wednesday, each team went through a full pro-style workout at Grimsley HS.  Thursday - Sunday, at UNC Greensboro, the regions will play, working their way through two 4 team brackets to ultimately decide a gold medal winner.

PBR will be on hand throughout the State Games, reporting on games, players and updating statistics for the players.

Day 1: Workout Day

As part of the workout day, each team took a full round of BP and ran timed sixties.  Defensively, players worked out, throwing from right field, shortstop, first base, and / or behind the plate.  Scouts and college coaches were able to get a feel for the player’s raw tools prior to moving into the event’s game stage.

PBR was on hand for the full workout day and will release 60 times and pop times, along with velocities and run times collected in games, at the conclusion of the Powerade State Games of NC.

Region 1

Only three commits on the Region 1 roster with three 2020 graduates.  Caleb Fluno (Home School, 3B/1B, 2019) has strength in a lanky 6-foot-5 frame.  The swing has some length but there were towering shots sent to the pull side gap.  The arm played with looseness as well. Robbie O’Neal (DH Conley HS, INF/C, 2019), a UNC Greensboro commit, may have had the best day from the region, showing arm strength from three different positions, as well as barrel awareness from both the left and right side of the plate.
