Tennessee Insider: 2021 Southpaw Sleepers

Colton Provey
Tennessee Scouting Director

With the fall winding down and the 21' season looming, an influx of senior commits have been rolling in as they find a good fit for the next level.  As the ink dries from national signing day for many, there are still skilled uncommitted seniors looking for their future home, and that doesn't exclude players lurking in the 200+ rankings.  Today, we breakdown six uncommitted senior "sleepers," all of which can contribute from the left side with summer/fall scout notes plus video.

21' Southpaw Sleepers

Ryan Bender, 1B/RHP, Pope John Paul II, 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound 1B/RHP has some intriguing two-potential after making steady strides throughout 2020.  Tall, proportional frame with good projection and some present strength.  Cleaned up the body a bit, looking more lean and better athleticism. At the dish, the left-handed hitter has an upright stance with compact, controlled load and moderate leg kick.  Generates good bat speed with a solid hit tool and flashes of gap-to-gap power while hitting behind the heart of the order for 5-Star Midsouth.  Defensively, an above average first baseman using his frame and long limbs to create a large catch radius.  Good footwork around the bag and can handle the glove with feel for picking any errant throws.  On the bump, embraced his role coming out the pen and working out of jams.  FB works in the 80-83 before getting up to 82-85 this fall at Lakepoint to go with downer CB at 70-74.
