The Five: Uncommitted 2019 Outfielders

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The Signing Period arrived on November 14th for 2019 graduates across the country.  For many, this means making their commitment a binding one by signing their NLI.  For others, they are still weighing their college decisions.

From our past studies in the Recruiting Essential articles, we know that more than half of the 2019 graduates that will commit, will still be uncommitted at the time of the early signing period.  Within the state of North Carolina, the number has been right at 35% of the class, or a little higher.

Players are still working, and getting better.  Schools are still evaluating their current roster and their future needs.  Below is a look at 5 uncommitted outfielders from the 2019 class, from North Carolina, that are still available and may be ready to impact the next level.  Each  is ranked in the just released NC Class of 2019 Rankings.

Scouting Report

06.20.18

5 feet 10, 170-pound athletic build. Speed and strength are evident.  Toolsy player that is raw at times but with high upside. Ran a 7.09 sixty on the laser timer on a very hot day that saw most times down a little.  Offensively, hits from the left side using an athletic, balanced setup. Small leg kick in his load, barrel working to vertical, getting his foot down early and lower half through the ball. Loose hands with above average bat speed. Looks to drive the ball in the gaps getting good extension out front. Fluid swing with ball off the bat topping at 87 mph. Barrel awareness tends to match head discipline - as the head stays quiet he finds the barrel.  Athletically plays through balls in the outfield with soft hands, quick, fluid feet, and clean, quick exchanges. Aggressive to the ball. Trust in is hands. Easy exchanges. Long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot. Occasionally falls to the glove side on his follow through. Accurate arm with advanced carry to his throws topping at 84 mph.

North Carolina State commit. Strong, athletic build at 5 feet 10, 165 pounds. Room to continue to fill out.  Hand strength and quickness in the body is advanced.  Premium arm strength from the outfield with the left-handed thrower peaking at 91mph. Soft hands with quick fluid feet playing through the ball with a quick clean exchange. Long, loose, accurate arm. Balanced setup from the left side with a smooth short load. Bat head begins flat, loading to a vertical position with some lag.  Repeats the launch position as each round progressed.  Short stride, working to the front side with some uphill leverage.  Gap to gap approach with premium bat speed. Good extension out front. Average barrel awareness.  Hand strength and quickness allow the frame to produce power.  Exit velocity of 89mph off the barrel.  Impressive testing numbers with a 3.86 in the 30-yard dash, 4.21 in the 5-10-5 agility test, and 10-9 in the standing broad jump.
