Then & Now: Noah Dean, Old Dominion

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

THEN APRIL, 30 2016: Dean is certainly a prospect to watch for the next four years. Now only 14 years old, he has room to grow and mature. The slender lefty starts his windup with a step to his right and a big leg swing for a leg lift just before he goes down the mound. Throws from a high three-quarter release point. Sat 80-81 and touched 82 during a start in a matchup against Boston Red Sox 1st round pick- Jay Groome. Dean showed very good pitch ability, as he is able to throw three pitches for strikes. Also able to throw off speed pitches in hitter’s counts. Possesses a good curveball with 1/7 movement at 67-68 mph, and a very good changeup that he gets many swings and misses on at 63-65. He competed very well against a good Barnegat team, going 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 K and did not walk a batter. (Hunt)

FEBRUARY 27, 2022: Now one of the top left handed college pitchers eligible for the 2022 MLB Draft, Dean is a product of what is affectionately known in PBR Channels as the Jersey Hallway training facility. Standing 6-foot-2, 185-pounds with an athletic frame, Dean recently had a quick outing vs. Binghamton, tossing only nine pitches and striking out two in the process. He uses a higher leg lift, shoulders closed, and strides landing slightly closed. It is a longer arm action that gets into a high three-quarter slot. The stride and higher slot bring some crossfire action to the 93-95 mph fastball with gradual bore action in on right handers. Dean was not afraid to pitch into all three of the right handed hitters he faced. He showed only one breaking ball in his nine pitch appearance that was a 76 mph hammer with 2550 spin. It had a hard 1/7 downer bite that tunneled well off of the fastball. He has a third pitch in the changeup that he did not show in the short work, but did show in warmups. (Burton)
