2020 Top 100 College Prospects

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

On March 12 when the NCAA announced the cancellation of all spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it prematurely ended the 2020 college baseball season. However, the top prospects had enough time to sort themselves out for the MLB draft when combined with their past performances over the years. We released our initial 2020 Draft Board in November when Emerson Hancock (Georgia), Asa Lacy (Texas A&M), Carmen Mlodzinski (South Carolina), Reid Detmers (Louisville) and C.J. Van Eyk (Florida State) led the list of pitchers. Since that time, two changes were made as Mlodzinski and Van Eyk weren’t quite as sharp this spring as they had been in the past.

Replacing those two and jumping into the Top 10 are Max Meyer (Minnesota) and Cade Cavalli(Oklahoma). Meyer showed explosive stuff early this spring with a fastball up to 100, while Cavalli refined his stuff, showing a more consistent slider and changeup, along with a fastball up to 97-98 this spring.

Also in November, Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State), Nick Gonzales (New Mexico State), Austin Martin (Vanderbilt), Garrett Mitchell (UCLA) and Heston Kjerstad (Arkansas) led our list of hitters. One change has been made to that list as North Carolina State catcher Patrick Bailey replaces Mitchell who dropped just a couple spots overall.

The overall strength of the 2020 MLB Draft continues to be college pitching; 33 of the top 50 are pitchers, while the list of shortstops is also robust with Baylor’s Nick Loftin, Mississippi State’s Jordan Westburg, Arizona State’s Alika Williams, Louisiana’s Hayden Cantrelle and Rice’s Trei Cruzleading the charge.

In terms of teams, Arizona State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan and Mississippi State lead the way with four players each in the Top 100, while Arkansas, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M each place three prospects on the list.
