Top Prospect Games - St. Louis: Pitcher Analysis

On Tuesday, June 5, Prep Baseball Report Missouri/Illinois held the Top Prospect Games - St. Louis at Southern Illinois Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois.  Sixty-six players from around the region participated. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard. Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today we take a closer look at the pitchers from the event. 

Below we ranked the Top three pitchers as well as the best of the rest from the day. 

Here is a closer look at the pitchers from the Top Prospect Games - St. Louis on June 5:

TOP PITCHING PROSPECTS

1. Andrew Pogue, RHP, Dunlap, 2019
6-foot-4, 185-pound, long, lean, highly-projectable, right-handed pitcher. Continues to emerge as one of the top uncommitted 2019 arms in the state. Looks to be scratching the surface of his potential. Arm action projects; loose, whippy and quick out of a high ¾ slot. Delivery works with some rhythm, stays on-line, lands square with regular effort throughout. Fastball, jumps out of the hand, run and sink action, late life, thrown for strikes, sat 88-90 mph, touched 91. Curveball, 11/5 shape, feel, 73-74 mph. Splitter, inconsistent action, occasional tumble, 74 mph. Changeup, erratic command, 80-81 mph. High-follow 2019 right-handed pitcher.

2. Cameron Edmonson, LHP, Rochester, 2019
5-foot-9, 165-pound, left-handed pitcher. One of the top uncommitted left-handed arms in the class. Long, loose, quick arm action from an over-the-top slot. Quick tempo in delivery, works on-line, lands square and smooth rhythm throughout. Above-average action on four-pitch mix. Fastball has late life, jumps through the hitting zone, sat 86-88 mph. Curveball, thrown aggressively, 1/7 shape, sharp spin, depth, swing-and-miss potential, 72-74 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, fade acton, thrown for strikes, 78-80 mph. Also, mixed in a cutter, short tight break, 81-82 mph. High-follow 2019 arm.

3. Derek Beauchamp, RHP, Raymore-Peculiar (MO), 2019
Beauchamp is a 6-foot-2 155-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Beauchamp has command of three pitches with excellent command of fastball, works quick between pitches and challenges hitters, throws downhill with a repeatable delivery and loose high three quarters arm slot. Fastball at mostly 86-87 mph, late two-seam action at times, breaking ball had tight and late 11-to-5 action, 72-74 mph, creates soft contact, throws change up with near fastball arm speed 80-81 mph, still room for physical development.

4. Ryan Rhoda, RHP, Prairie Central, 2019
6-foot-4, 180-pound, right-handed pitcher with an athletic, strong, wide-shouldered frame. Rotational delivery, high leg-lift with coil at balance point; lands closed and finishes athletically. Short, loose, quick arm action from a high ¾ slot with easy effort at release. Fastball works straight, downhill tilt at times, sat mostly 83-86 mph, touched 87. Curveball, put-away pitch, flashed sharp spin, 11/5 shape, late action, 73-76 mph. Did not see a changeup in game. Struck out four hitters and did not allow a hit in his two-innings of work. Follow 2019 right-handed pitcher.

5. Jack Sauser, RHP, Normal U-High, 2019
6-foot-6, 196-pound, right-handed pitcher; long, lean frame, plenty of room for continued physical development. Delivery works with rhythm, works down the mound on-line, lands front toe open with some effort at release at times. Clean arm circle, high ¾ slot with some quickness out front. Fastball, slight arm-side-run, thrown for strikes, sat 85-87 mph. Firm slider, 11/5 shape, tight, late action, feel, sat 77-80 mph. Saw one changeup at 80 mph. High-upside right-handed pitcher.

5. Aaron Schromm, LHP, Parkway South (MO), 2019
Schromm is a lean 6-foot-1 160-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Schromm is a strike thrower with a three-pitch mix, fastball topped at 84 mph and worked 82-84 mph with late running action, comes from an a short high three-quarters arm slot, slight tuck at balance point, works slightly across body adding some deception, curveball has 1-to-7 shape, land for a strike with gradual action, change up has late arm side run, 67-72 mph, throws with near fastball arm speed, still plenty of room to develop physically with loose arm action and lean build.

Jake Beauchamp, RHP, Raymore-Peculiar (MO), 2019
Beauchamp is a lean 6-foot 145-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Beauchamp has a repeatable delivery, works in line down the mound, quick and loose arm action, over the top release, throws with some effort at release, athletic, fastball at 82-84 mph, commands fastball to both sides of the plate, locates slider with 11-to-5 shape to both sides of the plate, 73-75 mph, throws change up at 80 mph, slight running action, throws all pitches down hill, locates to entire zone, works primarily out of stretch.  

Alex Buchanan, RHP, Kaneland, 2019
6-foot, 190-pound, strong, right-handed pitcher. Delivery works with regular effort, stays on-line and works with rhythm at times. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, thrown for strikes, downhill tilt at times, sat 82-84 mph. Curveball, worked 11/5, sat 65-68 mph. Did not see a changeup in game.

Braden Burcham, RHP, Timberland (MO), 2019
Burcham is a well built 6-foot-4 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Burcham comes from a high three quarters arm slot, smooth tempo with in line stride, throws with regular effort, works inline down the mound, finishes in athletic position, fastball at 78-81 mph, occasional running action, breaking ball at 62-65 mph, 12-to-6 action, sharp action, downward and late.

Christopher Conrad, RHP, Plainfield Central, 2019
6-foot-2, 160-pound, athletically-built, wide-shouldered, right-handed pitcher. Loose, easy arm action from an over-the-top slot. Drop and drive delivery, works on-line with regular effort throughout. Fastball, works straight, pitched to both sides of the plate, thrown for strikes, 80-83 mph, touched 84. Curveball 11/5 shape, 61-67 mph. Did not see a changeup.

Nick Gilhaus, RHP/1B, Normal Community, 2019
6-foot-2, 210-pound, two-way prospect, large frame. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, compact delivery, works with rhythm, stays on-line and finishes athletically. Long, loose arm action from an over-the-top slot. Fastball works straight, sat 82-85 mph. Curveball 12/6 action, depth at times, 70-71 mph. Changeup down in the zone, occasional fade action, 76 mph. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, smooth load, inward turn and short stride. Aggressive swing, path works uphill, present bat strength, gap-to-gap approach and 95 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, at first base, steady hands, plays under control. Long arm action, throws clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. 4.86 runner home-to-first.

Garrett Juergens, RHP, Sullivan (MO), 2019
Juergens is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Juergens has a quick tempo to delivery, works slight across body, hides ball well, arm works from high three quarters arm slot, fastball at 80-81 mph, work primarily inside to right-handed hitter but will work to both sides of the plate, slight two-seam action, breaking ball 67-70 mph, 11-to-5 action, early break with some depth, throws a high percentage of strikes with both pitches.

Chandler Kerr, LHP, Marian Catholic, 2019
6-foot-3, 210-pound, left-handed pitcher, strong, well-proportioned, wide-shouldered build. Delivery works with rhythm, slightly across his body, lands front toe closed with regular effort throughout. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, works straight, works to his gloveside at times, sat 79-81 mph. Curveball 1/7 shape, sat 62-64 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, straight action, 65 mph.

Turner Mann, RHP, Metamora, 2019
6-foot-2, 155-pound, long, lanky, right-handed pitcher. Compact delivery, minimal wasted movement, closes off stride adding deception at times and accelerates tempo at release. Arm works short and quick from an over-the-top slot. Fastball works straight, sat 79-81 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 67-71 mph. Did not see a changeup.

Jakob Rhoderick, LHP, Mascoutah, 2019
6-foot-4, 175-pound, left-handed pitcher, highly-projectable, long and lean left-handed pitcher. Compact delivery, slight tuck at balance point, works slightly across his body and lands front toe open. Long, clean arm action from an over-the-top slot. Fastball works straight, sat 74-77 mph, touched 78. Curveball, slows arm action at times, 1/7 shape, sat 60-61 mph. Changeup, mostly straight, occasional arm-side-run, 71-73 mph.

Treyton Ruth, RHP, Rolla (MO), 2019
Ruth is an athletically 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Ruth has a simple and repeatable delivery, high three quarters arm slot, throws with regular effort, in line stride with accelerated tempo, longer takeaway from glove creating some slinging action in arm action, curveball at 64-65 mph with 11-to-5 action, slider at 72-73 mph with more 10-to-4 shape, created soft contact with curveball, showed good command and feel.   

Nate Sammer, RHP, LeRoy, 2019
6-foot-2, 180-pound, athletically-built, strong, right-handed pitcher. Works from the stretch only. Controlled leg-lift, works on-line down the mound, lands square with regular effort throughout. Long, quick arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball worked mostly straight, cutting action at times, thrown for strikes, sat 83-85 mph, touched 86. Curveball worked between 11/5 and 12/6 shape, down in the zone, 70-72 mph. Did not see a changeup.

Mark Shallenberger, LHP, St. Louis Priory (MO), 2019
Shallenberger is a strong 6-foot-1 195-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Shallenberger comes from a high three quarters arm slot, smooth acceleration down the mound, throwing with some effort, opens slightly with stride, fastball worked mostly 80-81 mph, showed a sharp and late breaking ball at 68-69 mph, put away pitch, good feel, showed feel and maintained fastball arm speed with change up at 72 mph, attacks hitters, has good mound presence and feel.

Jonathon Yancik, RHP, Edwardsville, 2019
5-foot-11, 165-pound, well-proportioned, right-handed pitcher. Throws a high-percentage of strikes. Works out of the stretch, high-leg kick, works on-line and lands closed. Short, compact arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball works to both sides of the plate at times, works straight, sat 79-81 mph. Slider, flashed late sharp break, 70-72 mph. Changeup, sinking action, 73-74 mph.
