Top Prospect Games II: Infield Analysis

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, participated in this year's PBR Maryland Top Prospect Games II at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout and played a simulated game in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the 12 infielders from the event. 

 

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

(Listed Alphabetically)

Ryan Boice SS / C / Towson , MD / 2022

Body: 5’8’’, 165 pounds. Athletic body type with some strength. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, balanced, square stance at the plate with a small leg kick load. Gets the barrel on plane early and stays short to the ball with a more uphill swing path. Stays behind the ball well with balance and head down through contact. Showed some lower half involvement in the swing and with good extension out front and a strong two-handed finish. Quick, whippy barrel and solid gap to gap line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Flashed some power to the pull side with more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 81 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a low to mid three-quarter slot and has the ability to drop even lower when need be on slow rollers and double play feeds. 
Defense: Works through the ball fielding it out in front with quick footwork. Showed quick, clean transfers from glove to throwing hand and athletic actions on a variety of plays. 
Run: 7.51 60-yard time


Aidan Brinsfield RHP / 2B / Parkside , MD / 2023

Body: 5’10’’, 180 pounds. Solid body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, open stance at the plate. Short back load and small stride with hands extending out away from the body. Stays through the ball with some lower half involvement at times. More uphill swing path with extension out front and an abbreviated two-handed finish. Gap line drive type hitter with a tendency to get around the ball some. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Occasional pop to the pull-side with more developing. 
Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball with active feet, fielding it out in front. Rangy with clean, quick transfers. Shows ability to throw from various arm slots with accuracy and some carry. 
Run: 8.02 60-yard time.


Fredy Diaz Jr SS / 2B / Middletown, MD / 2024

Body: 5’7’’, 130 pounds. Athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a taller, balanced, square stance at the plate. Smooth back load and short stride with some hand separation. Stays behind the ball well with a more level swing path that has a tendency to get slightly uphill at times. Nice lower half involvement and balance throughout the swing. Short to, showing some bat speed through the zone. Gets extension past contact with a strong two-handed finish. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with more pull-side tendencies currently. 
Power: 77 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Occasional pop to the pull-side, power still developing.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Attacks the ball well with quick, active feet. Fields it out in front with smooth, soft hands and a quick, clean release. Shows solid range side to side with clean transfers and smooth actions on double play feeds. 
Run: 7.65 60-yard time.


E.J. Lowry SS / RHP / St. Johns Catholic Prep, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 160 pounds. Athletic frame with strength. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate with a controlled small leg kick load. Creates some separation and behind the ball with a more uphill swing path. Gets good extension through contact. Showed some bat speed and maintains balance throughout the swing with a long one-handed finish. Middle to pull-side approach. 
Power: 83 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Shows strength in the swing with power to the pull-side alley.
Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot and showed the ability to drop lower with accuracy depending on the type of play. 
Defense: Plays low to the ground with active feet. Gets around the ball and works through it to the target. Fields the ball out in front from a strong, athletic base. Lateral range present with smooth, advanced actions on the double play feed and slow roller. 
Run: 8.03 60-yard time.


Ryan Maxwell SS / RHP / St. John's College , VA / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 140 pounds. Athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate with a wide base. Rhythmic body and lower hand load creating separation. Short stride and maintains excellent balance throughout the swing. Really quick hands getting the barrel on plane early with fast, whippy bat speed through the zone. Stays on the ball well through contact with some lower half involvement and extension past contact. More level swing path and long one-handed finish. Middle to pull-side line drive approach. 
Power: 83 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Occasion pop to the pull-side with more developing. 
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Throws with short, quick arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick, active feet. Fields the ball out in front, funneling to the belt with quick, clean exchanges. Solid momentum towards the target with smooth actions. Rangy side to side with clean exchanges on double play feeds. 
Run: 7.50 60-yard time.


Ryan McLaughlin SS / RHP / Steven Decatur, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 150 pounds. Athletic body type and frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance with a short back load and toe-tap to initiate stride. Short to the ball with a compact, level swing and showed quick hands and quick bat speed through the zone. Stays down through contact with good extension and some lower half involvement. Nice gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Showed some gap pop with more power developing.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarter slot with throws showing carry across the diamond. Showed the ability to throw from multiple slots as needed. 
Defense: Sure-handed middle infielder. Rangy, plays with active feet, gets around the ball and works through it with clean actions. Fields the ball out in front funneling quickly to the chest. Smooth actions on the double play feed. With a little more polish will be a high level defender in the middle of the diamond. 
Run: 7.54 60-yard time.


Cody Rinehart SS / OF / Boonsboro, MD / 2022

Body: 5’10’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, closed stance at the plate. Smooth back load and short stride landing in-line to the rubber. Creates good separation and stays short to the ball with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. More uphill swing path, explosive lower half involvement, and great extension through contact. Stays behind the ball well with a strong two-handed finish. Solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 96 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Strength present to all fields with power to the alleys and more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 74 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well, fielding it out in front with soft hands. Funnels to the belt with smooth, quick releases. Solid range side to side with the ability to throw from various slots. 
Run: 6.87 60-yard time.


Alex Seidleck SS / RHP / Indian Creek , MD / 2021

Body: 6’3’’, 175 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate with a smooth back load and high leg kick. Creates some hand separation and stays mostly short to the ball with strong lower half involvement. Quick bat speed with a slightly uphill swing path. Gets extension through contact staying behind the ball with balance and a strong two-handed finish. Middle to pull-side approach. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Major strength and power present up the middle and to the pull-side. 
Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a low to mid three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with relaxed, active feet and actions. Fields the ball out in front, funneling quickly to the belt. Shows excellent range side to side with the ability to throw from various arm slots. 
Run: 7.73 60-yard time.


Tariq Talley SS / 3B / Towson, MD / 2022

Body: 5’11’’, 185 pounds. Strong, athletic body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate with a small leg kick load creating some separation. Showed quick hands getting the barrel on plane early with fast, whippy bat speed through the zone. Short to the ball with a slightly uphill swing path. Maintains balance throughout the swing with some lower half involvement. Gets extension past contact with a two-handed finish. Gap-to-gap line drive approach with slightly more tendency to go middle to the pull-side. 
Power: 90 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Showed some power to the alleys with more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 74 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with smooth, quick, active feet. Fields the ball out in front, funneling to the belt with a slight glove tap into release. Excellent range side to side smooth, clean actions.   
Run: 7.12 60-yard time.

 

CORNER INFIELDERS

Mitchell Hwang RHP / 3B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 175 pounds. Strong, athletic frame.
Hit: LHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate with a high leg kick load and short stride. Creates some hand separation and stays behind the ball with excellent balance throughout the swing. Short to the ball with a natural uphill swing. Creates quick bat speed through the zone with extension through contact and finish. Solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Shows strength and power to the alleys with more projected.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Throws showed some carry across the diamond. 
Defense: Showed some lateral range at third base and fields the ball in the center of his body. Feet stay active and work through the ball to the target. Slight glove tap in exchange. 
Run: 7.96 60-yard time.


Jack Peyser 3B / RHP / Quince Orchard , MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 140 pounds. Athletic, lean frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, slightly open stance at the plate. Short, controlled backload with separation and a toe-tap initiating stride. Stays on the ball really well with balance and keeps the head down on contact. Slightly uphill swing path with quick bat speed through the zone. Gets extension into a long finish. Gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Showed some pop to the gaps with much more projected as he continues to fill out. 
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot on most throws with the ability to change arm angles depending on the type of play. 
Defense: Split-step to ready, plays quick with active feet and fields the ball out in front with an athletic base. Showed nice lateral range and works through the ball to the target. Exchange gets long at times. 
Run: 7.69 60-yard time.


Robbie Shelton 3B / 1B / Riverdale Baptist, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 175 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a slightly crouched open stance with a wide base and weight slightly pre-loaded on the back side. Short, quick hand separation load with minimal stride. Stays short to and behind the ball with strong lower half involvement in the swing. Smooth, uphill swing with extension out front and a long one-handed finish. Showed quick bat speed through the zone and balance through finish. More middle to pull-side approach.
Power: 93 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Present strength in the swing and power to the pull-side with more projected in the near future. 
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot across the diamond. Shortens on double play feeds to second and showed the ability to throw on the run from a lower slot. 
Defense: Athletic actions at third base, moves well and fields the ball out in front from a strong base. Works through the ball with active footwork and utilizes a nice split-step to ready himself as the ball crosses the plate. Showed clean exchanges and transfers from the glove to throwing hand. 
Run: 7.75 60-yard time.
