Top Prospect Games II: Outfield Analysis

30 players from the Old Line State, DC, and Delaware participated in this year's Top Prospect Games II at The United States Naval Academy. Players were put through a pro-style workout and played a game in front of our PBR Maryland staff and various college coaches from across the Mid-Atlantic region. Below are evaluations on the eleven outfielders at the event. 

 

OutFIELDERS

Isaiah Beseris OF / 1B / Our Lady of Mount Carmel, MD / 2022

Body: 6’3’’, 185 pounds. Lengthy, athletic frame that has recently added more strength. 
Hit: LHH. Wide, backloaded setup with consistent, controlled rhythm in the hands. Stayed stacked up on launch, using a short up/down load to initiate his swing through a twitchy, flat path into the hitting zone. Top of the order profile with a gap to gap approach in the box, held low posture and got into the legs well enough to do damage to the pull side. 
Power: 93 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles/triples power to pull, especially showing comfortability peppering the RCF gap with footspeed present. 
Arm: LH. OF - 80 mph. Quick, short high ¾ slot on the target with ASR. 
Defense: Centerfield/left field qualities with ability to track the ball in the air, quick first step and can drop and go get it. Approach with confidence fielding off the right foot with two hands, could kill the ball and funnel inward with an accurate throwing arm on the front end. Rangy defender cuts down balls in the gap with solid route-running skills. 
Run: 6.89 60-yard time.


Alex Craig OF / RHP / Crofton, MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 165 pounds. Lean, athletic, projectable frame with feel in all phases.
Hit: RHH. Wide, even setup with slight backload into the right leg as the hands operated loosely above the shoulder, next to the ear. Utilized a quick, controlled leg lift stride in order to initiate a tight turn over the right side; the hands played through a vertical, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Twitchy actions and ability to lift on pitches anywhere in the zone, mature approach. 
Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power to the pull-side gap, but can also do damage the other day with good connection overall. 
Arm: RH. OF - 86 mph. Loose, high ¾ slot with good extension out in front. 
Defense: Above-average reads and light on his feet, centerfielder qualities with natural feel in space. Banana routes in order to sustain range and direction to either side, flashing trust in the glove hand off the outside of his left foot, corralling to the belt-loop with pace. 
Run: 6.73 60-yard time.


Adrian A Gonzalez 1B / OF / Chesapeake , MD / 2023

Body: 5’10’’, 193 pounds. Strong, durable frame with a thick lower half. 
Hit: RHH. Crouched, wide setup with a slight bend in the knees. Utilized a short lift and replace stride as the hands worked to a deep load position outside the shoulder; the hands initiated through a flat, balanced path into the hitting zone allowing for repeatability during batting practice. Line drive approach at head height, spraying from centerfield towards the left center gap with authority. Stayed in the legs well and didn’t try to do too much; mature round. 
Power: 93 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power to the pull-side gap and has more juice in the tank (connected/lower intent). 
Arm: LH. OF - 72 mph. INF - 71 mph. Short and quick high ¾ slot with accuracy. Can drop down on throws across the infield. 
Defense: Adequate footwork with solid reads off the bat, set up with active footwork fielding off the right foot and corralling inward towards the belt line. Worked in a straight line directionally at the target. 
Run: 7.31 60-yard time.


Liam Houghton 1B / OF / Good Counsel, MD / 2022

Body: 6’2’’, 215 pounds. Strong, advanced frame with a sturdy base in the legs. 
Hit: RHH. Narrow, balanced stance with the hands showing plenty of rhythm above the shoulder; utilized a leg lift and stretch combination with the hands getting deep outside the shoulder for launch, initiated through a whippy, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone with high intent. Mostly pull-side approach demonstrating strong wrists at the plate, could keep the barrel in the hitting zone for a long period of time, working through extension on all quadrants. Generated a 60% hard hit rate to go along with plenty of loft in the approach. 
Power: 95 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power in the middle of the field and noticeable jump to the pull side for occasional home runs. 
Arm: RH. OF - 86 mph. INF - 84 mph. Loose, high ¾ slot with early length and then quickness on the front side. He could shorten up into a V-slot when needed from the INF. 
Defense: From his primary position, stuck the foot in the ground with stalking actions, staying behind the ball with regularity. Fielded off the left side of his body flashing slight downhill momentum and clean transfers into the throwing hand. Infield: ranged in either direction with comfortability to the left side, funneled inward with a soft glove that could operate in any direction with choppy feet. 
Run: 7.23 60-yard time.


Massimo Liuzzo OF / 1B / Walt Whitman , MD / 2023

Body: 6’3’’, 193 pounds. Projectable, lengthy frame with big time athleticism. 
Hit: RHH. Wide, bent stance with the barrel pointed upwards at a 45 degree angle next to the ear at a controlled position. Utilized a repeatable lift and replace stride in order to initiate his swing through a flat path into the hitting zone. Noticeable feel for the barrel using top-notch bat to ball skills and barrel awareness during batting practice. Peppered the ball at head height from gap to gap, flashing a mature approach and natural feel for the hit tool. Generated plenty of loft (80%+ fly ball rate) hinting at continued growth into a power-hitting mold as he matures; actions should allow for quick results. 
Power: 95 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Easy power to pull, generating tons of backspin towards the LCF gap. Developing into a notable power threat with home run juice as he keeps adding strength. 
Arm: RH. OF - 84 mph. Loose, high ¾ slot with carry towards the plate. 
Defense: Hop step in the prep work; got early reads off the bat getting the chest downhill immediately in the routes; used tangible momentum to shorten the throwing distance to the target as well as create positive power transfer into release. Fluid athlete in space and controlled where he wanted to field the ball at, should handle any two of the three outfield positions. 
Run: 7.15 60-yard time.


Michael Martin OF / Southern , MD / 2022

Body: 6’0’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic frame with lots of feel present offensively. 
Hit: RHH. Crouched, narrow stance with the hands waving on the shoulder to create early rhythm; utilized a short and precise leg lift stride to initiate the swing through a bursty, flat path after a barrel tip at the top of the load. Was consistently on the sweet spot generating lots of hard contact to the pull side. Worked himself into strong, powerful positions in order to hit behind the baseball with efficient energy transfer. Mostly LCF, gap to gap approach during batting practice. 
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Showed strength to pull with tight, quick turns. Projects to accrue extra base hits all over the field and can run it out of the yard to LF on occasion. 
Arm: RH. OF - 79 mph. Quick takeaway and moderate arm circle on the way through. 
Defense: Choppy, accurate footwork trusting the glove hand to operate smoothly out in front of the body. Solid pace and the chest worked downhill; accurate throws on the target with LF/CF projection. 
Run: 6.96 60-yard time.


Nate Matkins 2B / SS / Chesapeake , MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 160 pounds. Wiry, lean, athletic frame with some leverage. 
Hit: RHH. Wide, open stance with the weight backloaded over the right leg. Utilized a dropped hand position to a lower slot for launch coupled with a short leg lift stride to initiate his swing through a flat path. Gets the elbow in the slot early and works towards extension allowing for line drive contact through the middle of the field. Slightly handsy at times, but gets the job done en route to a 50% fly ball rate during BP. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power with room to continue adding strength/bat speed.
Arm: RH. OF - 74 mph. Short high ¾ “V-slot” with accuracy on the bag. 
Defense: Approached with active footwork, setting himself up at an even, balanced position with semi-soft glove hand working out in front. Could rush timing on the setup occasionally, but handled himself smoothly for the most part. Rangy to the glove hand side with comfortability attacking slow rollers. 
Run: 7.45 60-yard time.


Harry Middlebrooks RHP / OF / Archbishop Curley , MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 175 pounds. High-waisted, projectable, and athletic frame with more strength coming.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open, balanced stance with a loose upper half start. Utilized a short leg lift stride that operates with stretch towards the pitcher, wide base landing and launched through a flat path into the hitting zone. Above-average connection in the swing, keeping the barrel in the hitting zone for an extended period of time. Created leverage out at the front of the plate, generating jump to the pull-side gap in the approach. 
Power: 94 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power when the hands get out in front of the plate. 
Arm: RH. OF - 80 mph. High intent, moderate arm-slot with quickness at release, good extension towards the target with accuracy on the bag. 
Defense: Shifty, mature defender that gets behind the ball and works straight downhill through the plate; a soft glove hand transitions softly off the left side, staying fluid through the catch and throw phase. Projects to stay at a corner outfield position moving forward. 
Run: 7.38 60-yard time.


Teegan Murphy 1B / OF / St. Michaels , MD / 2022

Body: 5’10’’, 175 pounds. Strong, durable frame with compact power in the build. 
Hit: RHH. Open, narrow setup with some rhythm pre-swing, utilized a big leg lift stride getting to a stretched position with some weight shift at launch; initiated through a flat path flashing occasional lift through impact. Stayed over the backside well, allowing the hands to work, handling pitches over the plate with authority back through the middle of the field. Mostly pull side approach hitting into a stiff front side at impact. 
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power on pitches up in the zone to pull-side (LF).
Arm: RH. OF - 82 mph. INF - 75 mph. Gets to a nice W position early with length in the takeaway, reaching towards the mitt out in front on the release. INF: Tighter, quicker V-slot on occasion that can reach back when needing more, accurate with repeatability. 
Defense: Good reads with ability to delay footwork and stay behind balls in the air. Soft, trusted glove hand working out in front of the left foot with soft actions; funneled inward with a clean exchange giving way to an accurate throwing arm towards the plate; approached with attacking style, breaking down on time into a low, balanced position at the fielding window. 
Run: 7.79 60-yard time.


Jackson OBrien OF / 1B / Severna Park , MD / 2024

Body: 6’2’’, 165 pounds. Prototypical, projectable frame with long levers and developing athleticism in the movements. 
Hit: RHH. Slightly open, bent stance with the hands favorably starting at the shoulder, utilizing a leg lift with hip coil into a stacked up backside. Landed with stretch, initiating the hands through a quick, twitchy, flat path into the hitting zone. Matched pitch plane early with success going back through the middle with hard contact; whipped the bat head through extension, generating consistent line drives (40%) when on time. More power on the way as he keeps adding strength. 
Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power to the pull-side (320 foot max batted ball distance). 
Arm: RH. OF - 77 mph. Short, moderate arm circle with a slight hitch at the top and smooth out in front. 
Defense: Average pace and worked downhill through the baseball fielding off the left foot. Projects a stay in LF with length that can be further accompanied by more strength. Solid actions early in routes with some range to the glove side. 
Run: 7.26 60-yard time.


Trenton Player OF / RHP / Annapolis , MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 165 pounds. Athletic, compact frame with good proportions. 
Hit: RHH. Open, balanced stance with a slight bend in the knees to start; utilized a stretched step outwards towards the pitcher, setting up a wide attack in a low-postured position. Initiated the bat head through a flat, slightly uphill path into impact creating plenty of hard contact through the LCF gap. Strong rotational power and intent at the plate; worked hard to push off the backside to obtain extra burst. 
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power to pull and can stay on it for hard contact the other way as well. 
Arm: RH. OF - 78 mph. Lengthy, athletic arm swing with no restrictions; accuracy. 
Defense: Quick, downhill, attacking play with pace to back it up; beat the ball to the spot showing a soft, easy glove hand and repeatable exchanges. 
Run: 6.88 60-yard time.
