SOUTH LYON - Being the son of a baseball coach certainly can have an effect on a person.

That is the case for Trey Haeger, whose father Greg was head coach at Madonna University for 21 years.

“I played football and hockey up until high school, but I always wanted to play baseball,” reflected the uncommitted Detroit Catholic Central senior. “My dad was head coach at Madonna for 21 years so I was always around it and knew that’s what I wanted to do. I went to games all the time, I hung out at practices and I learned from it.”

The lessons taught by his father have rubbed off on the third-ranked 2020 first baseman in the state.

“My dad has been a huge influence,” explained Haeger, whose father led Catholic Central to the Class A state baseball title in 1987. “He’s always been there for me. He played at Michigan and professionally. His guidance has been great for me. He’s always willing to help out with batting practice or ground balls.”

A two-time All-Big 10 selection, who went on to play in the Tigers’ organization, won 617 games in his time coaching at the NAIA level before stepping down in late 2016. This past season he was an assistant coach at Catholic Central in a program that has proven to be highly beneficial for his son.

“Everyone is dedicated to baseball and loves to win,” the 17-year-old Haeger said of how playing at Catholic Central is helpful. “We all have a common goal to come together and go as far as possible while also becoming a better player and person.”

To date, seven seniors on this coming season’s team are committed to play baseball at the next level with Haeger looking to become number eight.

“I’ve had offers and visited Adrian, Alma and Lourdes and had interest with a visit to Wayne State,” noted the 82nd-rated senior in Michigan. “I liked the facilities at all the schools and the coaches were all nice. They made me feel wanted.”

As a student carrying a 4.14 GPA and a 32 on his ACT, school work is obviously very important to Haeger.
