Uncommitted Upside 2021s

This week, the Prep Baseball Report released an updated and expanded 2021 Overall Rankings. Stocked with talented players from top to bottom, the 2021 class is already showing itself to be highly impressive. With so much depth to the talent on the list, On the Hunt takes a look at some of the players outside of the top 100 who could make significant progression in the future. Each equipped with plenty of upside, these players are likely to be followed closely by college recruiters moving forward.

Tommy Meyer LHP / 1B / Wauwatosa East, WI / 2021

Meyer’s loose arm stroke and effortless velocity stood out over the winter at a PBR Wisconsin preseason event, and he will likely continue to see quick advancements throughout the spring and summer. At 6-foot-4, 180-pounds, Meyer sports a long-limbed, wiry-athletic frame that showcases plenty of projection. He puts together a simple, compact delivery that allows his longer arm stroke to work continuously before releasing out of a high ¾ slot with quick hand speed. Working linear down the mound, Meyer has excellent posture that allows him to find a consistent release point while getting extended towards the target. He was up to 85 mph in the early bullpen with control to both sides of the plate, and there is a strong chance that he will be up even higher this summer. The curveball (68-70) was still in early stages of the off-season, but his ability to spin the pitch stood out as it swept across the plate with 2/8 break. It flashes multi-tier break and could potentially be a swing and miss offering sooner rather than later. He demonstrated above average feel for the changeup at 74-78, showcasing the ability to subtract while pounding the zone with late, fading action to the arm side. Overall, Meyer’s projectable frame and loose arm will likely have coaches following him closely in the future, especially as the weather warms and he gets more innings.
