Illinois Underclass Showcase: Top Overall 2022 Prospects

On Oct. 20, the PBR Illinois hosted its final event of 2019, the Underclass Showcase, featuring over 110 of the state’s 2022 and 2023 prospects, as well as a handful of seventh- and eighth-grade players, at The MAX in McCook.
Last month, we shared our rapid analysis for this event inside our Quick Hits post, and took a statistical look at the day’s top performers inside our Stats Story. Monday marked the start of our position-by-position analysis, beginning with the day’s catchers, which led to the event’s outfielders, infielders, and pitchers. Today, we conclude our event analysis by ranking the top-10 prospects from both the 2022 and 2023 class. We’re starting with our 2022s, so be on the lookout for the ‘23s coming later this afternoon.
Here are the top-10 sophomores at PBR Illinois’ final event of 2019, the Underclass Showcase.
TOP-10 2022 PROSPECTS

Ysen Useni RHP / 1B / Crystal Lake South , IL / 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/1B High-follow 2022, raw strength.
Body: 6-foot-2, 205-pounds. Strong projectable frame.
Delivery: Tall and fall delivery, lands square and in line, athletic finish.
Arm Action: RH. High 3/4 slot, long and loose action, plus arm strength with regular effort.
FB: T87, 84-86 mph. Slight run, thrown for strikes.
CB: 65-67 mph. 11/5 shape, sharp break.
CH: 71-75 mph. Thrown with near FB arm speed, feel for the zone.
Hit: RHH. Athletic set-up, smooth leg lift, quiet hand load. Short bat path, extension through swing, quick bat speed, strong lower half. Ball jumps off the barrel.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Short arm action, high 3/4 slot. Ball carries across diamond, accurate.
Defense: Fluid footwork around the bag, soft hands, glove plays below the baseball.
Run: 7.23 runner in the 60.

Positional Profile: OF
Body: 5-foot-11, 155-pounds. Athletically-built.
Hit: RHH. Wide, athletic setup, stays quiet, minimal load, short stride and maintains balance through contact. Simple swing, easy effort, loose athletic hands. Fast bat, long through the zone, hard contact and sprayed balls to all fields.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. OF - 87 mph. Long, quick arm action from an over-the-top slot; throws carry, played true and were accurate.
Defense: Fluid outfield actions, light on his feet, body control, plays through the baseball in rhythm.
Run: 7.04 runner in the 60.

Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 6-foot, 155-pounds. Athletic build.
Delivery: Tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, presence on the mound.
Arm Action: RH. High 3/4 slot, long and loose arm action, quick arm speed, regular to easy effort.
FB: T83, 78-82 mph. Sink, thrown for strikes.
CB: 62-63 mph. 11/5 shape.
CH: 70-71 mph. Arm-side run, down in the zone.
Hit: RHH. Open set-up, slight knee bend, quick leg lift, long stride. Short, uphill pat bath, gap to gap approach, swings with intent.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 86 mph. Long and loose arm action, over the top to high 3/4 slot, ball carries across diamond.
Defense: Clean exchange, soft hands play through the baseball, corner infield actions present.
Run: 7.57 runner in the 60.
