Wednesday night saw Woodgrove travel to Briar Woods for a Potomac District showdown. On a cool breezy evening, both teams started seniors in the game, with Woodgrove going with Christian Hile (Marshall) and Indy starting Inigo Jensen (Cal Tech).

Pitching dominated the early portion of the game, with Briar Woods scoring a run in the second after Hile walked the bases loaded with two outs and Corey Coogan (Roanoke) rolled a ball through the infield, a second run was cut down at the plate on a through from shallow right by JD Robinson (Virginia Wesleyan).

Other than that, Jensen and Hile kept both offenses in check in the first four innings. Woodgrove broke through in the fifth when Riley Smith drove a run in with a one-out double to left center. A second run was cut down at the plate with a nice relay to keep the game tied.

Hile exited the game after the fifth and Ty Edmondson entered for the bottom of the sixth with the game tied. Briar Woods would take the lead when Drew Petitt (Eastern Mennonite) delivered a two-out single to left.

In the top of the seventh, a leadoff single and a walk ended Jensen's night, with Connor Hughes entering the game in relief. An errant throw on a sacrifice bunt scored the tying run and put runners on the corners with no outs. Hughes got a pair of strikeouts and then Woodgrove ran an early break first and third play and Hughes balked, bringing in the go-ahead run.

Briar Woods got the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push them across as Edmondson got a strikeout to end the game.

For Woodgrove, Hile went 5 IP, 1 R, 8 K, 4 H, 4 BB, Edmondson was the winning pitcher with 2 IP, 1 R, 4 K, 3 H, 1 BB. Smith was 2-3 with 2 2Bs and an RBI and Tony Monastero was 1-2 with a BB. For Briar Woods, Johnson went 6 IP, 3 R, 6 K, 3 H, 5 BB. Hughes had 3 K in his 1 IP. Evan Smith (West Virginia) was 1-2 with a 2B, a BB. Matt Quigley was 1-1 with 2 BBs and a SB. Petitt was 1-2 with a BB and an RBI.
