VA/MD State Games: 2023 IF Breakdown

In early November, over 140 players from Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina descended on War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia to take part in the 2021 VA/MD State Games. We continue our detailed breakdown of the event with the 2023 infielders.

Wyatt Alridge SS / 2B / New Community, VA / 2023

6-foot, 150-pound athletic build. Recorded a time of 7.06 in the 60-yard dash. Fluid in the box, the left-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 82 mph. (65.6 mph bat speed average). (19.0 mph hand speed average). Began in an athletic stance with a compact load, then used a small leg kick. Bat speed was efficient, showed an upward swing plane and balanced finish. He created some loud contact and found some barrels. Solid while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 75 mph; has sure hands, consistent feet, and a fluid exchange. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot with a short arm action. 

Seth Buchanan SS / RHP / Lebanon, VA / 2023

5-foot-11, 180-pound strong athletic frame. Displayed speed and athleticism at the event, recording a 60 time of 6.82. Starts in an athletic narrow stance with a rhythmic load, then uses a controlled toe tap stride. Bat speed was present quick, used a short upward swing plane and high balanced finish. Was able to create loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap line drive approach. Athletic projectable at the plate, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 90 mph. (74.2 mph bat speed average). (22.0 mph hand speed average). Smooth athletic in the infield, displayed a velocity of 83 mph; has a quick natural exchange, soft sure hands, and athletic rhythmic feet. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Had a quick consistent arm action and a ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the bag.

Yoon Chae SS / 2B / Cape Henry Collegiate, VA / 2023

5-foot-9, 155-pound solid proportional frame. Athletic projectable at the plate, Chae's best exit velocity was 89 mph. (68.9 mph bat speed average). (19.9 mph hand speed average). Starts in an open active stance with a rhythmic active load, then uses a controlled small leg kick. Bat speed was raw efficient, displayed a short uphill swing plane and high good extension on his finish. Through his round he found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Aggressive line drive approach. Smooth athletic in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 81 mph; has a quick clean exchange, soft twitchy hands, and athletic choppy feet. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a short quick arm action with a high ¾ slot. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.88.

Carter Childs 3B / RHP / Chancellor, VA / 2023

6-foot-4, 170-pound projectable athletic build. Solid fluid at the plate, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 86 mph. (66.0 mph bat speed average). (19.1 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced stance with a smooth active load, then used a leg kick. Has a simple upward swing plane, present quick bat speed and high balanced finish. He barreled up some balls with loud contact. Aggressive gap to gap approach. Confident projectable in the infield, his best throw was registered at 77 mph; shows fluid in control feet, a clean natural exchange, and sure consistent hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Used a high ¾ slot and a short quick arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.52.

Lion Gardiner RHP / 2B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

5-foot-10, 160-pound projectable sturdy frame. Capable fluid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 83 mph. (65.6 mph bat speed average). (18.8 mph hand speed average). Starts in a tall open stance with a quick controlled load, then uses a leg kick. Has present efficient bat speed, short uphill swing plane and high finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Aggressive approach. Confident in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 82 mph; had consistent hands, rhythmic fluid footwork, and a quick clean exchange. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Used a high ¾ slot with a short quick arm action while showing decent accuracy to the base. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.42.

 

 

Parker Haynes 3B / 2B / New Kent , VA / 2023

 6-foot-1, 180-pound strong proportional build. Solid fluid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 93 mph. (69.3 mph bat speed average). (18.1 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced athletic stance with a controlled rhythmic load, then uses a leg kick. Bat speed is efficient, displays an upward an inside-out swing plane and level balanced finish. Found some barrels with loud contacts. Gap to gap approach. Solid in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 81 mph; showed a clean fluid exchange, sure consistent hands, and choppy in control feet. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Used a high ¾ slot and a compact consistent arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. Clocked a time of 7.23 in the 60-yard dash.

Logan Helser 1B / 3B / Clear Spring , MD / 2023

5-foot-11, 200-pound solid strong build. Projectable confident in the box, Helser clocked an exit velocity of 93 mph. (72.3 mph bat speed average). (20.7 mph hand speed average). Begins in a crouched athletic stance with a quick compact load, then uses a small leg kick. Bat speed was efficient quick, used a short simple swing plane and balanced finish. Had loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Projectable fluid while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 75 mph; had a natural exchange, consistent developing hands, and rhythmic fluid footwork. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a longer loose arm action with a high ¾ slot. Clocked a time of 7.71 in the 60-yard dash. 

Jase Howell SS / RHP / Nansemond Suffolk Academy, VA / 2023

6-foot, 190-pound strong proportional frame. Solid confident during batting practice, the left-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 85 mph. (71.3 mph bat speed average). (21.0 mph hand speed average). Begins in a strong wide stance with a quick active load, then uses a short controlled stride. Bat speed was raw, used a level uphill swing plane and high good extension on his finish. Barreled up lots of balls with loud contact. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Fluid in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 84 mph; has sure consistent hands, rhythmic in control feet, and a clean natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.7.

Dylan Hudson 3B / 2B / Mills Godwin, VA / 2023

 6-foot, 175-pound athletic proportional frame. Smooth confident at the plate, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. (66.2 mph bat speed average). (18.8 mph hand speed average). Started in an open athletic stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then used a controlled toe tap stride. Bat speed is raw, exhibits a short an inside-out swing plane and balanced good extension on his finish. In his round he found some barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid confident in the infield, his best throw was registered at 78 mph; has choppy consistent feet, a natural exchange, and sure hands. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Showed a short quick arm action and a ¾ slot with decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.33.

Mitchell Hwang RHP / 3B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

6-foot, 185-pound strong sturdy frame. Solid confident during batting practice, Hwang had a max exit velocity of 90 mph. (71.5 mph bat speed average). (22.7 mph hand speed average). Starts in a wide balanced stance with an active load, then uses a leg kick. Bat speed was efficient, showed a flat upward swing plane and level finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Aggressive approach. Solid confident in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 83 mph; showed sure consistent hands, a clean exchange, and in control fluid feet. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Decent accuracy to the bag, used an-over-the-top slot and a short quick arm action. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.74

Matthew Kim 2B / SS / Langley, VA / 2023

5-foot-10, 160-pound lean athletic frame. Fluid projectable at the plate, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. (67.4 mph bat speed average). (21.6 mph hand speed average). Starts in a wide balanced stance with a rhythmic active load, then uses a leg kick. Had an upward swing plane, quick raw bat speed and high back foot finish. Found some barrels with loud contacts. Aggressive approach. Smooth athletic in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 75 mph; showed soft sure hands, fluid rhythmic feet, and a clean quick exchange. Movements laterally were athletic and he fields the ball out front. Using a short compact arm action, showed consistent accuracy to the base from a high ¾ slot. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.31.

Charlie Krebs RHP / 1B / Woodgrove, VA / 2023

6-foot-1, 210-pound physical sturdy build. Solid at the plate, Krebs best exit velocity was 90 mph. (69.3 mph bat speed average). (21.4 mph hand speed average). Started in a wide strong stance with a compact load, then used a quick stride. Bat speed is average, shows a flat an inside-out swing plane and high good extension on his finish. He barreled up some balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid confident while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 84 mph; has a natural exchange, in control consistent feet, and sure consistent hands. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a compact arm action and a high ¾ slot. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.38.

Michael Lewis OF / RHP / Steward School, VA / 2023

6-foot, 175-pound long lanky frame. Fluid projectable in the box, Lewis clocked an exit velocity of 91 mph. (68.0 mph bat speed average). (24.3 mph hand speed average). Started in a tall open stance with a controlled smooth load, then used a toe tap stride. Has raw present bat speed, simple swing plane and balanced good extension on his finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Solid in the outfield, he showed the ability to make throws to the bases at 84 mph; has a clean exchange, sure hands, and choppy rhythmic feet. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a quick short arm action and a high ¾ slot. Recorded a 60 time of 7.48 at the event.

Trey Ludy SS / RHP / Cave Spring , VA / 2023

6-foot-1, 160-pound lean lanky frame. Capable projectable during batting practice, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 93 mph. (69.6 mph bat speed average). (22.1 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced stance with a controlled active load, then uses a controlled toe tap stride. Bat speed was present, used a long level swing plane and balanced finish. Found some barrels with loud contacts. Aggressive approach. Jason Pearl SS / 2B / West Springfield, VA / 2023

 5-foot-7, 145-pound solid proportional build. Solid fluid during batting practice, Pearl clocked an exit velocity of 83 mph. (65.1 mph bat speed average). (20.6 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced stance with a controlled active load, then used a controlled leg kick. Bat speed was present developing, showed a short simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. Created loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap approach. Ryan Perry SS / RHP / Calvert Hall, MD / 2023

 6-foot, 175-pound solid proportional build. Capable above average at the plate, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 84 mph. (66.6 mph bat speed average). (21.0 mph hand speed average). Started in a tall quiet stance with a rhythmic load, then used a toe tap small leg kick. Bat speed is efficient, displays a short swing plane and balanced finish. He barreled up some balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Smooth solid in the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 85 mph; had a clean natural exchange, in control fluid footwork, and sure consistent hands. Cameron Rizzo SS / 2B / Deep Run, VA / 2023

Robbie Shelton 3B / 1B / La Plata , MD / 2023

6-foot-2, 190-pound lanky projectable frame. Smooth confident during batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 95 mph. Begins in an open wide stance with a compact load, then uses a short quick stride. Bat speed is flashed explosive, shows a short simple swing plane and balanced good extension on his finish. Justin Tobin SS / 2B / Mills E. Godwin, VA / 2023

Caden Ward SS / RHP / Great Bridge, VA / 2023

5-foot-10, 160-pound lean frame. Begins in a balanced strong stance with a controlled rhythmic load, the uses a leg kick. Had a short, simple swing plane, quick efficient bat speed and balanced finish. (63.2 mph bat speed average). (18.6 mph hand speed average). During BP found some barrels with loud contact. Aggressive approach. smooth athletic in the infield. Has athletic controll in his feet, soft hands, and a quick clean exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Used a quick short arm action and a high 3/4 slot while showing consistent accuracy to the bag.
