MANDEVILLE, LA – The rain finally let up enough in south Louisiana, and the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff was able to hit the road and take in some early season action.

On Friday, we traveled over to St. Paul’s high school as the Wolves hosted the Covington Lions in a district 6-5A matchup. It would be all Wolves on Friday night, defeating the Lions 10-0 after scoring eight runs in the final two innings. 2019 RHP Jacob Scherer (St. Paul’s HS, LA) would dominate on the mound, allowing 0 runs on one hit, striking out seven in the complete game effort.

2019 OF Nick Vitale (St. Paul’s HS, LA) would lead the way offensively, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Louisiana State recruit, 2021 SS Connor Simon (St. Paul’s HS, LA) and IF Nick Wright (St. Paul’s HS, LA) put together multi-hit performances as well, with Simon finishing the day 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Wright went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

On Saturday we headed over to Lake Charles, LA to catch a matchup between the two premier teams in the state, the Barbe Bucs and Sam Houston Broncos. The Bucs would eventually take the season’s first matchup, defeating the Broncos 3-0. Mississippi State recruit, 2021 RHP Jack Walker (Barbe HS, LA) was dominate on Saturday, to say the least, as he would not allow a baserunner until two outs in the top of the 7th inning. He would allow 0 runs on one hit, while striking out eight, and walking none, on 79 pitches (Only 18 of which were balls).

South Alabama recruit, 2019 OF Carter Quinn (Barbe HS, LA) would set the tone atop the Buc lineup Saturday, as the left-handed hitting outfielder finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Mississippi State recruit, 2020 SS Davis Meche (Barbe HS, LA) would deliver the big blow in the bottom of the 3rd inning, smacking a two-run double to right-center. LSU-Eunice recruit, 2019 OF Bryce Larocca (Barbe HS, LA) would add a single and run scored as well, while Louisiana State recruit, 2020 OF Brody Drost (Barbe HS, LA) would finish the day 1-for-3, showing advanced feel to hit with polish and strength from the left side.

2020 RHP Kyle Bartley (Sam Houston HS, LA) would ultimately come up short, but pitched extremely well, allowing only two earned runs on five hits, striking out four, while walking only one. He showed quality stuff in six innings of work, pitching 85-87 mph with his fastball, and showed a firm breaking ball with depth at 75-77 mph.
