Jay M. Robinson  -  4                      Cox Mill  -  2

Two 2023 arms combined to limit Cox Mill to just two runs on Friday night.  Trace Humberger worked the first 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, and struck out 6.  Humberger flooded the zone with a three pitch mix, pounding the ball down and away from hitters.  In his 89 pitches, he threw 62 for strikes (70%).

Robinson jumped on the board in the 1st inning with a leadoff triple from Tyler Grady.   Grady would score on a B Moore single.  With two outs a Jake Dameron double would give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.  In the 2nd, the Bulldogs began the rally with 2 outs, taking advantage of a walk and an error, before Brandon Moore and Humberger each knocked RBI singles.  The early 4 run lead would hold up with the effort of the freshman arms.

After cutting the lead to 4-1 in the 6th, Cox Mill would load the bases with no outs versus a relief arm.  A hit by pitch then cut the lead to 4-2 before the Bulldogs turned to freshman righty Colby Van Hook.  Van Hook promptly induced a pop up to 2B, followed by two strikeouts to end the game with the tying run in scoring position.  Van Hook pumped 9 strikes in 14 pitches, attacking with his fastball.

West Lincoln  -  1                            Lake Norman Charter  -  9

Jackson Shore attacked the strike zone over 6 innings of work, limiting opportunities for the West Lincoln Rebels to even threaten the scoreboard.  Offensively, Shore would get all he needed in a 3 run 1st inning as the Knights jumped out early and never looked back.

Shore gave up just 2 hits and 1 unearned run over his 104 pitch outing.  He threw 68 strikes (65%), working ahead of 16 of the 25 batters faced.  Shore did walk three but erased a lot of those with his 9 strikeouts.

Jared Ryan led the Lake Norman Charter offense with 2 hits, accounting for 1 run and 2 RBI.  Nick Coggins also recorded two hits, with 5 Knights tallying at least 1 hit.

Apex  -  1                            Holly Springs  -  2

Holly Springs hosted Apex in the first and potentially last conference matchup for both teams in the 2020 season.  Senior Air Force commit Sam Kulasingam got the start on the mound for Holly Springs.

Leadoff man/starting pitcher for Apex Jacob Coffin beat out a chopper to SS in the 1st. After subbing in a pinch runner for Coffin, Holly Springs catcher Michael Groves quickly killed the rally back picking the runner at 1b.

Bats stayed quiet on both sides until Holly Springs applied pressure in the 2nd. UNC Asheville commit Michael Groves led off the frame with a walk, followed up by a liner to LF off the bat of UNC Wilmington commit, Bryan Arendt. Coffin walked uncommitted senior Riley Kenney to load the bases with no outs. Coffin settled in, picking up a big strikeout for the first out. The next batter, Alec Benigar, picked up an rbi with a 1 out walk. Coffin struck out the next batter and got Sophomore NC State commit Billy Waldron to fly out to RF limiting the Hawks to one run.

Apex answered in the top of the 3rd sparked by a leadoff walk. The runner advanced to 2b on a dirt ball read. Kulasingam retired the next two hitters but the runner advanced to 3b on a past ball with 2 outs. Jacob Coffin helped his own cause with a 2 out rbi single past the diving 1b to even up the game at 1.

Holly Springs responded quickly in the top of the 3rd. After Coffin set down the first two Hawks hitters, Michael Groves drew a 2 out walk. The courtesy runner for Groves stole second bringing Arendt to the plate. Coffin induced weak contact, but Apex 3b made an errant throw wide of the bag, allowing Holly Springs to reclaim the lead at 2-1.

After walking the leadoff man in the 4th, Holly Springs lifted Kulasingam for Junior RHP/ECU commit Jaden Winter. Michael Groves gunned down the leadoff runner attempting to steal 2b. Winter walked the next batter, but settled in to retire the next two hitters.

The go ahead run in the 3rd proved to be enough for Winter, who dominated the Apex lineup in the last 3 frames. Pitchers were impressive from both sides, scattering a combined 3 hits on the night.
