Preseason Top-50 JUCO Prospects

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

Junior College talent was well represented in the 2024 MLB Draft, with 25 players from the NJCAA ranks earning selections during the three-day event. The first two names to come off the board were LHP Brandon Clarke (State College of Florida) in the fifth round by the Red Sox and INF Caden Powell (Seminole State, OK) selected in the sixth round by the Astros.

At this point, the 2025 JUCO class lacks a sure-fire Day One draft talent, but it's a talented group featuring a mix of projectable arms, tooled-up athletes and an impressive catching crop. Many are former highly-ranked prep prospects and/or Division I bounce-backs.

Keep in mind this is a current top-50 and much will change in the very near future as the transfer portal is open and growing by the day. Players cannot transfer from a D1 four-year college to another D1 four-year and become eligible to compete this coming spring season, but they can transfer and play immediately in the junior college ranks. Expect this route to be fast and furious over the holiday break, causing numerous changes to the top-50 and beyond.

The state of Texas continues to be a hotbed for JUCO talent with a list-leading 13 prospects in the top-50, including three in the top-10. Florida has four of the top-15, but looks in the state were limited when Hurricane Milton washed out a weekend showcase.

As for programs, McLennan (TX) leads the way with seven prospects in the top-50 and a few other names that just missed inclusion. A 30-year veteran scout has compared the Highlanders' depth of talent this fall to the great Chipola team of 2000 that included future big leaguers Jose Bautista, Russell Martin and Adam Loewen. That's pretty high praise for the must-see squad from Waco.

Curated by Prep Baseball’s JUCO Wire staff, the top-50 is the product of first-hand scouting, data analysis, and conversations with coaches, scouts and other members from across the baseball industry. It reflects not only how these players are viewed as MLB Draft prospects heading into the 2025 season, but also as potential impact performers at the four-year level in 2025-26. The rankings only include those players who attended junior college this fall semester and do not include any already announced mid-year transfers from four-year colleges.
