About Prep Baseball Events
The Preseason ID series is unique in several ways. It serves as an identifier heading into the spring high school season, giving our scouts as well as college recruiters, a list of prospects to follow as they plan their spring coverage. We also tend to see prospects best performances in the preseason, as most athletes are fresh and coming off of strict and targeted off-season training programs that have resulted in big gains, primed for updating their Prep Baseball profile. All of which lends the perfect opportunity to secure invitations to some of the summer's biggest invite-only events such as the Top Prospect Games, Prep Baseball Future Games, and more.
Preseason All-State events are the premier winter invite-only showcases across Prep Baseball's ecosystem. The Preseason All-State is the culmination of Preseason IDs leading into the high school season, with the goal of foreshadowing who the top prospects of the high school season might shape out to be.
Inside this piece, our analysts assessed the Preseason All-State rosters for this weekend's showcases in California and Texas to highlight pitchers to know in advance, using 2024 data obtained at Prep Baseball events.

+ The roster in San Diego this weekend is a really exciting one in terms of position players, including the Cathedral Catholic juniors Alex and Hunter Harrington, both of whom are highly ranked nationally and committed to Stanford. Also included is Kentucky transplant 1B/OF AJ Curry (University City HS, 2026; Tennessee commit), who represented his native state at the 2024 Prep Baseball All-American Game before transferring to his new home in San Diego.
While Curry's offensive prowess is the driving force behind his recruitment to Tennessee, etc., he actually owns some of the most interesting pitching data among those headed to the event, that's worth mentioning. The southpaw was up to 88.4 mph at August's KY State AC Games, and he works from a well-below-average release height (5.3 feet) and he has displayed the ability to manipulate his fastball shape between that of a cutter and a sinker. On occasion, he was able to cut the fastball, generating as little arm-side movement as -0.4 inches. Other times, he was able to generate upwards of -16 inches of arm-side movement. His breaking ball plays with the shape of a true sweeper, averaging -0.9-inch iVB and 11.2 inches of HB. Curry also flashed the ability to kill vertical break on his changeup, reaching as low as 2.5 inches of iVB. His left-handed bat will carry him through high school and beyond, but it's fun to consider a potentially bright future on the mound.
+ INF/RHP Malakye Matsumoto (Notre Dame HS, 2026) has some real upside on the mound, with a loose, athletic arm attached to a slender 6-foot-4, 190-pound stature. At October's Orange County Uncommitted Games, Matsumoto reached an 89.4 mph high from a 5.4-foot release height on average, generating nearly 16 inches of iVB and over 12.6 inches of HB on average. He gets down the mound too, extending 6.7 feet on average, aided by his long levers that he moves fluidly. He's got two-way potential, though we're especially eager in getting an updated look at how his secondaries are progressing in between looks.

Jake Ourique RHP / Gahr, CA / 2026LOYOLA MARYMOUNT COMMIT Scouting report from the 2024 California State Games, published Aug. 16: "Ourique continued his outstanding '24 high school and summer schedule with yet another sterling performance at the CA State Games. Working off his fastball and slider predominantly, while mixing in his impressive changeup at times, he worked a solid two innings where he picked up multiple strikeouts. His fastball velocity was at 86.8-88.5 mph while his slider continues to look better as a secondary offering, 71-74, and nearing 2,400 rpm on its spin rate while getting -17.9 inches of horizontal movement at its peak. Ourique's changeup is his present best secondary giving off above-average to plus potential, 75-77, during CA State Games averaging a spin rate of 1,400 rpm, showing his effective ability to kill spin while getting 18.9 inches of horizontal movement giving him and east/west offspeed mix between the offspeed combo to go with his fastball, and the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes." – Steven Hardesty, Central Coast, North LA Area Scout |
Ourique is a projectable 6-foot, 185-pounds with present strength in his lower half. The LMU commit put together a stellar sophomore campaign in 2024, earning Prep Baseball California All-State honors in the spring and an invite to the Future Games in the summer.
Ourique possesses a true three-pitch-mix with his fastball, slider, and changeup. His fastball has a rise-and-run profile, yielding above average carry (16.8” iVB) and above average run (13.3” HB) despite his well below average release height (5.3 feet). His slider plays with the shape of a sweeper, averaging 1.0-inch iVB and -14.2-inch HB. The velocity on the pitch is budding, as he has increased his average and max velocity for the slider in each event he attended in 2024. His changeup plays well off of his fastball, as he does an excellent job killing both spin (avg. 1440 rpm) and vertical break (avg. 6.1” iVB). Following his impressive performances throughout the 2024 calendar year, we are eager to see his performance and data from the upcoming Inland Empire Preseason All-State event. For more context on how Ourique’s pitch movement compares to the average big-league RHP, see the plot below.
+ RHP Gavin Cervantes (St. John Bosco HS, CA) is a wiry and athletic 6-foot, 171-pound right-hander who also showed well at the CA State Games in August. The junior’s arsenal consists of a two-pitch mix, a fastball and a slider. Despite the fact that Cervantes launches from an average release height (5.8 feet), he generates above-average carry (avg. 18.3” iVB) on a fastball that has touched 90.0 mph in-game. The fastball also generates above average arm-side movement (avg. 11.7” HB). He mixes in a slider that flashed potential with both shorter and sweeper shapes. When thrown with a shorter shape, the pitch sat in the upper-70s and peaked at 80.4 mph. When thrown with a sweeper shape, the pitch sat in the mid-70s and reached upwards of -14 inches HB on several occasions. The uncommitted junior will look to impress our staff again at the upcoming Inland Empire Preseason All-State event.

+ RHP Osvaldo Nuñez (Notre Dame HS, 2026) is a projectable 6-foot-4, 190-pounds with long and loose limbs, and he made his Prep Baseball event debut at the Orange County Uncommitted Games in October, impressing with a three-pitch-mix and punching out four of five batters faced.
He showed well again earlier this month in front of our staff at a winter ball game, too. Even with his frame, Nuñez operates from a well below average release height (5.1 feet). Despite the low release angle, his fastball plays with a rise-and-run profile. The pitch sat in the upper-80s and peaked at 91 mph, while generating slightly above average carry (avg. 16.5” iVB) and above average arm-side run (avg. 14.6” HB). His secondary offerings were seldom used during his outing, but they each flashed potential. The changeup is thrown hard, sitting in the low-80s already. The uncommitted junior showed the ability to kill plenty of vertical break (min. 7.5” iVB) while adding arm-side movement (avg. 18.4” HB). His breaking ball has shown plenty of sweep, peaking at -11.5 inches HB and averaging over 10 inches of glove-side movement. The breaker's velocity is also budding, as it was in the upper-60s in October, then up to 74 during his outing in winter ball.

Aiden Shreve RHP / Pieper, TX / 2026BAYLOR COMMIT Scouting report from Top Prospect Games: College Station, published June 28: "One of the top pitching performances on the day belonged to Shreve. The junior-to-be from Pieper High has a frame to dream on. Standing 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Shreve has plenty of room to continue to add strength. His fastball topped out at 89.6 mph on the day, and he is going to throw harder. The slider showed some promise. He showed the ability to throw it for a strike, it lacks some bite right now, but as he throws it harder it should continue to improve. He flashed a change that shows the potential to be a useful third pitch. Shreve looks the part of a big-time arm, and he continues to trend in the right direction." – Brandon Gowins, Texas Scouting Director |
Shreve is an athletic 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior that is set to attend the upcoming South Texas Preseason All-State. The Baylor recruit showed well across a variety of events during the last calendar year, subsequently representing Texas at the 2024 Future Games and making his debut in the national rankings.
Shreve’s fastball development over the course of the past year has been particularly intriguing, as his velocity has increased and the pitch shape has changed a considerable amount. During his outing at last January’s San Antonio Preseason ID, the fastball sat in the mid-80s with cut-like action, averaging 11.7 inches iVB and -0.4 inches of HB. By the Top Prospect Games in late June, Shreve’s velocity had jumped to the upper-80s, topping out at 89.6 mph. The shape of the fastball had gone through a transformation since his bullpen in January, as he showed increased carry and run (avg. 14.2” iVB, 7.2” HB). The following month, at the nation’s premier event for uncommitted players, Shreve’s velocity peaked at 91.6 mph. He averaged similar carry to his previous outing (14.1” iVB), but continued to add arm-side run to his fastball, averaging 8.97-inch HB. His final outing at a Prep Baseball event came at September’s Texas State Games. There, he maintained his velocity, sitting in the upper-80s, touching 90.6 mph. He also showcased above-average carry (avg. 17.1”; max 21.7” iVB) from a slightly below-average release height (5.7 feet).
After his breakout 2024 campaign, we are excited to see how he shows at the upcoming South Texas Preseason All-State event.
+ RHP/INF Jackson Fetters (China Spring HS, 2027) is an athletic 6-foot-1, 199-pounds with some strength in his lower half. The China Springs product has performed well in front of our staff a variety of times in the last two years and is prominently slotted in our 2027 national rankings. Using a long and loose arm action, Fetters works from a release height that is slightly below average (5.6 feet) and he has run his fastball up to 88 mph already. Because of his arm angle, the pitch plays with above average arm-side movement (avg. 13.3” HB). The metrics on his breaking ball stood out at the Texas State Games in November.
The pitch currently sits in the low- to mid-70s and plays with sweeper shape, averaging -2.0-inch iVB and -15.8-inch HB during his outing in November. He finishes off his arsenal with a fading changeup that averaged 15.3 inches of arm-side movement. Already proven to be one of the top arms in the region’s sophomore class, it will be exciting to see how he performs at the South Texas Preseason All-State event this weekend.
