NC/SC Boder Battle - 2020 Middle Infielder Analysis

Eddie Tisdale
Scouting Director - South Carolina

On July 24th, top players from North Carolina and South Carolina converged on Winthrop University for the first ever NC/SC Border Battle.  The Border Battle allowed players to workout and compete in front of college coaches and pro scouts, while updating their information for their PBR Profile, connecting them with over 900 college coaches and pro scouts that subscribe to PBR.

The event was a huge success with players from each state impressing those in attendance.  The process to break all of the information down has begun.  Player statistics have been loaded to the event page and onto each player’s personal PBR Profile.  Along with stats, each player has a PBR Video from their workout on their profile page.

Today we begin to take a look at the individual performances from the Border Battle.  Below is a comprehensive look at the 2020 Middle Infielders from South Carolina.

Will Baumhofer SS / 2B / Greenville, SC / 2020

The 5-8 165lb LHH infielder has a smaller profile with good present strength. The proportional frame has broad sloped shoulders and a slender torso and moderate strength in the lower half. 6.88 sixty was his PBR event best. LHH with a short knee tuck load and small stride. Hands load with a simple barrel turn with little movement in the upper body. Lofted bat path with line drive tendencies and good feel for the barrel. Solid glove with avg. first step quickness. Natural instincts in the field, 2B/3B profile. Arm action can get long at times but arm strength plays. HIGH academic.

Cameron Burgess 2B / RHP / Waccamaw, SC / 2020

Compact frame with sloped shoulders and proportional limbs. Some strength in the lower half and limited projection remaining. 7.45 sixty time was his PBR event best. Wider stance with the weight stacked slightly on the back side. Vertical bat angle through the load and into the launch. High stride timing mechanism. Stride foot hits with small external rotation,  clears the hips into a strong front side with occasional barrel lag. Stays connected with the torso throughout working uphill to a two handed finish. Active feet working through ground balls with consistent rhythm. Fields the ball just off the midline to the glove side. Funnels the ball to the midsection and gets it out quickly with avg. carry to first base.

Travis Elliott SS / RHP / Gilbert, SC / 2020

Smaller build with good present strength. Broad shoulders, slim mid section, and powerful lower half. 81 mph infield velocity. 85 mph exit velocity (tee). Balanced stance with slight crouch. Loose pre pitch rhythm with the hands. Small stride with minimum hands load. Slightly uphill path through contact. Looks to drive the ball into the games. Good torque and hip rotation. Consistently behind the baseball. Avg. lateral quickness and good instincts in the field. Low approach to ground balls, sustained momentum through the fielding process. Carried throws to the target with accuracy. Skillset would sustain a move to 3B if necessary.

James Hanvey SS / 2B / Walhalla, SC / 2020

Wiry athletic 6-0 frame. Projectible build and high ceiling. 7.06 sixty time. 81 mph infield velocity. 87 mph exit velocity (tee). LHH with good feel for the barrel. Athletic stance with the weight pushed slightly into the back side. Holds the back elbow even with the shoulders and presets the barrel slightly behind the head. Toe tap timing mechanism. Stride foot lands with external rotation. Load pushes the hands deep over the back foot and raises the bat to a near vertical position. Hands work clean through the inside of the ball. Good extension. Good first step quickness helps the defense play up. Played through ground balls with active footwork and confident hands. Fielded the ball just off the right side of his center line and funneled the ball into the mid section and got it out cleanly with a quick arm stroke. Charleston Southern recruit.

Lawton Harris SS / 2B / Cheraw, SC / 2020

5-9, 160lbs slender build and flashes of athleticism. Sneaky fast runner. 6.75 sixty time. 79 mph infield velocity. 80 mph exit velocity (tee). Balanced stance and quiet hands pre-launch. Turns the shoulders slightly with a small stride that lands slightly closed. Good barrel turn and torque through the lower half. Flat bat path with contact first approach to the middle/opposite field. Fields the ball with short choppy approach steps and the right foot staggered slightly. Maintained a broken rhythm through the play. Played the ball just off the right side of his center line. Short arm stroke and fringe avg. carry on throws.

Christopher Tribble SS / 2B / Clover , SC / 2020

Lean 6-1 frame with high waist and long limbs. Narrow through the torso and lower half. 7.34 sixty time. 77 mph infield velocity. 89 mph exit velocity (tee). Tall narrow stance. Open, with a short stride with medium length that never quite gets back to parallel. High hands with the barrel laid over the back shoulder angled downward. Hands load back as he turns the barrel up. Hands start downward with the bat at the 11 o'clock position. Steep attack angle. Line drive tendencies. Bat was quick out of the zone at times. Lower two handed follow through ending just below the shoulders. Worked to get around his ground balls and maintain momentum to 1st. Bends the hips to lower the glove into the fielding position. Fielded the ball just inside the left hip and funneled to the belt. Used a glove tap to regain control of the body and get the throws out. Avg. carry present.
