Quick Hitters: Upstate Mavs Pitchers

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Executive Director

On Saturday May 22nd, PBR converged onto Big League Camp in Marion, NC where the Upstate Mavs were hosting an organizational weekend.  Part of their organizational weekend was a PBR Scout Day, allowing their players to go through a full pro-style workout, posting numbers and receiving feedback.  Players attending the scout day will receive their stats, a video, advanced analytics from TrackMan, and an evaluation, all hosted on their PBR Profile page.

The day started with pitchers throwing controlled bullpens.  TrackMan was able to track ball flight and give in-depth stats on each arm that threw.  Following the pitchers, the position players ran a laser timed 60 and then went through offensive evaluations, again with TrackMan providing feedback.  The position players finished the day with their defensive workout. All players stats below were collected during the pro-style workout.  Each player will have his workout on video, posted to his profile page in the coming days.

QUICK HITTERS: Pitchers

Yates Bland, RHP, Chapin HS, 2022
Lanky and tall 6-foot-6 frame.  High ceiling with room left to grow into the ceiling.  Fastball up to 87.  Worked with intent.  Breaking ball peaked with a spin rate of 2469 rpm.  Erratic at times with stuff fluctuating, but flashed swing and miss pitches.

Hunter Gomes, RHP, Hanahan, 2024
Stocky frame with some strength present.  Up tempo, strike thrower.  Athletic delivery and loose over-the-top slot.  Fastball up to 80 with solid carry through the zone.

Landon Gomes, LHP, Hanahan, 2024
Some athleticism in a still maturing frame.  Up tempo throughout the bullpen.  Works with pace.  Good arm speed from a high-3/4 slot.  Fastball peaked at 81.  Solid feel for fastball / curveball.

Asher Goss, RHP, Laurens, 2024
Strength present in a 5-foot-10 frame that is still maturing.  Good whip in the arm through an over-the-top slot.  Fastball works with angle when down zone.  Peaked at 86 with hard run through the zone.  Top to bottom breaking ball, thrown for a strike consistently.  Spin on the breaking ball peaked at 2587 rpm.

Tyler Hodges, RHP, Dutch Fork HS, 2023
Over-the-top slot that flooded the down zone, producing angle to the fastball and breaking ball.  Fastball at 86 with excellent ride through the zone, probably allowing it to play above the velocity.  Late, sharp 11/5 tilt on the breaking ball with a spin rate of 1889 rpm.

Hunter Howard, RHP, JL Mann HS, 2024
Medium arm swing, working out of his sleeve through a high-3/4 slot.  Solid arm speed.  Occasionally cut the fastball at 82.  Showed feel for 4 pitches.  Slider and curveball have different action from similar windows.  Good feel for the change-up.

Mac Ketchin, RHP, Wando HS, 2022
Lanky and projectable frame.  Some effort in the arm swing working to a high-3/4 slot.  Good arm speed.  Plenty of projection left in the growth of his stuff.  Fastball peaked at 86 with heavy arm side run.  Hard, late breaking ball works with length away from a right-handed hitter.

Braden Mauro, RHP, Daniel HS, 2024
Some length in the frame.  Frame will handle strength as it begins to mature.  ¾ slot with some cross fire in the delivery.  Fastball up to 80 with whip through the release.  Sweeping breaking ball, with length, from the slot should cause some issues for right-handed hitters.

Drew Medley, RHP, Gaffney HS, 2024
Thin frame will continue to add strength with maturity.  Short arm swing to an over-the-top slot.  Around the zone with all three pitches.  Fastball up to 80.  Straight change has solid deception in the arm speed

Cooper Revels, RHP, AC Flora HS, 2024
Long arm swing works behind the body line getting to a high-3/4 slot.  Athletic with some effort.  Heavy run with the fastball peaking at 79.  Solid, early makings of the secondary stuff.

Cooper Robinson, RHP, Pinewood Prep, 2022
Advanced feel for 3 pitches.  Up tempo on the mound with an athletic delivery.  Worked down hill out of the hand.  Fastball peaked at 84 with some arm side run.  Sharp 10/4 tilt on the breaking ball that is setup to give hitters issues as arm strength and speed continues to develop.  Spin of 2625 rpm on the curveball.  Good arm speed on the change, with run and fade as it nears the zone.

Adam Serwinowski, LHP, Eastside HS, 2022
Lanky 6-foot-4 frame.  Choppy rhythm in the delivery, still working around the zone with 3 pitches.  Fastball tended to cut at 84.  Hard, downer breaking ball thrown with intent and a spin rate of 2336 rpm.
