Southern Wisconsin Open: Pitcher Analysis

By Wisconsin Staff

On Oct. 17, the PBR Wisconsin crew traveled to STiKS Academy in Waukesha for its annual Southern Wisconsin Open event. This event was open to all high school classes and gave our staff one last chance to see these prospects in attendance prior to the start of the offseason. We published instant insight in the days following this event in the form of our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts. We began our position-by-position analysis this past week, publishing reports on the day’s catchers, outfielders, and infielders – and we’re onto the pitchers today.

We separated the group below by the top uncommitted seniors and the top 2022-24 pitchers in attendance. But, with that being said, it’s fair to call sophomore RHP Jonah Conradt (Hortonville, 2023) the top overall pitching prospect in attendance. We were big fans of Conradt this summer in our multiple looks, as he wields one of the most live arms in the class. It appeared that he ticked up in the fall, taking a big leap forward earlier than expected, and he punctuated those reports with a stellar performance here. He reached an 88 mph high and he showed the feel to mix in a couple upside offspeed offerings in a changeup and curve. The sky’s the limit for one of the state’s best pitching prospects.

Chippewa Falls senior RHP Leo Burmeister (2021) pieced together a complete ‘pen, showcasing a viable three-pitch mix and peripherals that allow his arsenal to play up. He’s a thin 5-foot-10, so it’s a wonder how he could benefit from a boost in strength to take his interesting repertoire to the next level.

Freshman Colton Angell (Oshkosh North, 2024) made waves as an infielder, taking an advanced round of batting practice, but he also demonstrated some polish from the mound. It’s a simple, clean, quick arm that projects especially from his sturdy build that he’s already molding muscle from.

Southpaws Gavyn Bowen (Pewaukee, 2023) and Jackson Brewer (Homestead, 2024) were each responsible for two of the day’s cleanest bullpens. Bowen, a sophomore, was up to 81 mph with big arm-side run and a complementary changeup, with the feel to spin a breaking ball. Brewer is a very projectable 6-foot-3 athlete who works at a fast pace, filling up the zone. He was up to 78 mph and mixed in a capable changeup and sweeping breaking ball.

For full scouting reports on each of the day’s pitchers, continue on below.

Tyler Schmitt, Madison Memorial (WI), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-1, 155-pounds. Thin, lanky levers with broad shoulders; projects well.
Delivery: Upright start from the middle of the rubber; simple side step to high knee balance point, level shoulders. Strides with short extension, slightly closed landing with toe open. Shorter extension creates some noticeable separation in hip and shoulder. Low-effort involved, easy landing, balanced finish.
Arm Action: RH. Clean, compact arm action to a high 3/4 slot. Again, low, easy effort.
FB: T81, 79-80 mph. Natural arm-side action; flashed carry, late break at times.
CB: 65-66 mph. Above-average feel for spin; slight deceleration. Features depth with some sharp action off an 11/5 plane; averaged -15.1 inches of vertical break and -16.7 horizontally. Average spin rate of 2,157 rpm.
CH: 70-73 mph. Slight deceleration but the pitch projects; consistent arm-side run/fade.
