USA Prime Scout Day: Pitching Quick Hitters

On Wednesday September 28th PBR of South Carolina was on hand at Flour Field for a scout day with USA Prime. The scout day featured players from the 2023-2027 grad classes.

The evening started with catchers going through a defensive evaluation then pitchers throwing a controlled bullpen with Trackman collecting data analytics. After the bullpens position players ran a laser timed 60 followed by BP on the field with Trackman collecting ball flight data. After BP outfielders and infielders went through a defensive evaluation.

Quick Hitters - Pitchers

 

 

JJ McKinney, RHP, 2023

5-11 170 pound lean athletic frame with room to add on.  A controlled smooth tempo delivery with a high leg lift and really coils in to load up.  Lands slightly open going down the mound.  Throws from a high ¾ slot and runs his fastball up to 85.5 mph with an average spin rate of  2130 rpm.  Curveball was up to 74.2 mph and an average spin at 2288 rpm with a short break to it.  Change up was up to 80.1 mph with an average spin at 1432 rpm with some sink and fade to it.     


Matthew Connor, RHP, 2023

5-10 177 pound frame with some strength to it.  A Slow tempo controlled delivery with good direction down the mound.  Throws from a low ¾ slot with a long arm swing in the back.  Fastball was up to 82.7 mph and average spin at 1800 rpm.  Curveball was up to 67.5 mph and an average spin at 2020 rpm.  Change up showed good fade and some sink to it while up to 75.5 mph and average spin at 1878 rpm.


James Shennan, RHP, 2023

6-0 175 pound lean athletic frame.  Athletic delivery with good direction down the mound.  Longer arm swing in the back with a high ¾ arm slot with good arm speed.  Fastball was up 85.1 mph with an average spin at 2320 rpm and a max spin up to 2521 rpm.  Curveball showed good break and action to it while up to 73.2 mph and an average spin at 2088 rpm.  Change up had good fading action to it down in the zone up to 74.1 mph and an average spin at 1971 rpm.  


Gavin Hug, C/RHP, 2024

6-0 172 pound frame with present strength and room to add on.  A methodical delivery with athleticism to it and a high leg lift.  Gets good direction down the mound while throwing from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball shows some run and sink to it while up to 84.6 mph and an average spin at 1865 rpm.  Curveball showed a short break to it while up to 73.5 mph and an average spin at 2008 rpm.  Change up has good action with sink and fade down in the zone at 77.4 mph and an average spin at 1259 rpm.  


Cody Southern, RHP, 2023

5-11 180 pound lean frame with room to add on.  Quick paced delivery while having good direction down the mound.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot with a smooth longer arm swing in the back.  Fastball was up to 78.1 mph with an average spin at 1634 rpm.  Curveball spun at an average spin at 1748 rpm while up to 62 mph.  Change up has some fade and sink to it with and average spin at 1233 rpm.     


Cooper DeVries, OF, 2027

6-0 165 pound lean athletic frame.  This youngster showed a smooth slower paced delivery from a preset loaded setup.  Worked down the mound well while throwing from a high ¾ arm slot with good arm speed.  Fastball was up to 82.1 mph with an average spin at 1558 rpm.  For his off-speed threw a split finger that was up 74.7 mph with an average spin at 1185 rpm while showing good diving action to it.
