2022 Canada Summer Games - The Standouts

Our staff was all over Niagara during the 2022 Canada Summer Games that saw the top 17U players across the country competing in one tournament. We got a look at a ton of talent from coast to coast, including another look at several of our 2022 Future Gamers.
Below, our scouting staff highlights several standouts from Saskatchewan, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario.
SASKATCHEWAN

Carter Beck C / 3B / Carnduff Education Complex, SK / 2023Carter had impressive at bats and opened eyes down at the 2022 Canada Summer Games. His 5-foot-10 frame is sturdy and athletic on basepaths, and looked comfortable in the outfield with positive route running ability. Short leg kick, compact swing with an ideal bat path. Showed an ability to make consistent solid contact and a mature approach from the left side of the dish. Gathered a handful of extra-base hits during the opening prelims and proved himself to be one of the better hitters on Saskatchewan’s team.

Evan Deringer C / 3B / Martin Academy, SK / 2023The 5-foot-10, 180lbs catcher looked comfortable behind the plate. The uncommitted 2023 showed quality receiving with a strong, positive presence for pitchers and good IQ. Showed off some sneaky pull side power to left field with a controlled swing from the right side of the dish. An interesting young catcher to watch as he continues to develop.

QUEBEC

Deiten Lachance C / 3B / Le triolet, QC / 2023Lachance showed an ability to have quality at bats game after game. His projectable 6-foot-4 , 235lbs frame is able to generate power with ease, consistently creating hard contact for extra bases. Fights off borderline pitches and makes pitchers come to him. Advanced receiving behind the dish, current catcher for the Junior National Team as well. A 2023 that remains uncommitted and would be a strong contributor to any collegiate program.

Jacob Wallace RHP / 1B / Chene Bleu Pincourt, QC / 2024Wallace pitched an impressive shutout game against Team Manitoba on August 8th. The uncommitted 2024 stands at 6-foot-3, 230-pounds and works from a 3/4 arm slot, with control for all his pitches. FB sits in the upper 80s. Attacked hitters early in counts, pitching to the corners, making batters uncomfortable in the box. Generates weak contact and has swing and miss potential with a four pitch mix. He impressed coaches and scouts down at the ‘22 Future Games a few weeks ago as well.

Elliot Cadieux Lanoue LHP / OF / Fadette, QC / 2023The 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher showed off an ability to pitch effectively against any lineup. Has a 3/4 arm slot with a strong feel for his pitch mix, alternates between a loopy curveball and a late-breaking slider to generate swings and misses. Good mound presence, athletic movement in his delivery, works low in the zone. A ‘22 Future Gamer and Junior National Team member.

NOVA SCOTIA

Benito Bonilla 1B / RHP / Foothills Composite, NS / 2024Bonilla’s physical 6-foot-4, 210lbs frame stood out at the Canada Summer Games. The young outfielder showed athletic movements in the field and good route running ability. From the right side of the plate, Bonilla shows a strong bottom half in his load, explodes his hips and generates good hand speed. Ideal bat path that helps balls get put into play. Has 2-Way potential as he looked comfortable on the mound, smooth delivery with swing and miss off-speed. Definitely an interesting 2023 to keep a close eye on as he enters his senior year.

ONTARIO

Brendan Lawson SS / 3B / Lawrence Park , ON / 2024Lawson continues to exceed expectations as the summer is wrapping up. An athletic 6-foot-3, left handed bat that has one of the better looking swings in the nation. Slight toe-tap load, keeps the hands back and generates power at ease. Quality approach to hitting which translates into game, hitting multiple home runs on the first day of the Summer Games. Clean footwork at shortstop, assisted on multiple double play balls. He had an impressive Future Games performance down in Atlanta, and is continuing to impress college coaches and scouts up north.

Owen Slater RHP / Brooklin High School, ON / 2024Slater is another Future Games member continuing to impress at the Canada Summer Games. The right handed pitcher is a lanky 6-foot-3, 165lbs with a whippy arm action that hides the ball well. Sits mid 80’s with his fastball but has a strong feel for his curveball and changeup, mixing his speed and locations well. Looks comfortable on the mound and had a strong Team Saskatchewan lineup off balance and guessing. Has potential to increase his velocity, and will be interesting to watch as he continues to add strength and mature.

Frank Anthony Caietta RHP / OF / Holy Trinity Catholic , ON / 2023
Rankings StateRank: 52 / POS: 11
Caietta was an interesting arm out of Ontario’s bullpen. Large 6-foot-4, 220lbs frame with controlled, fluent movements on the mound. Fastball has some slight arm side run, and counters with a sharp breaking curveball that generates swings and misses. Has an upbeat delivery with good shoulder/hip separation working the fastball up to 86. Frank-Anthony was also a Team Canada representative at the PBR New York State Games a few weeks back.
