5 Star Scout Day Stats

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On October 21st, Cumberland hosted a Scout Day for the 5 Star organization.  This event included a position player workout, followed by pitchers throwing a 10-15 pitch pen on the game mound. Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of the PBR Tennessee staff. Due to rain, the position player portion was filmed on the side field next to the baseball field and all the hitting occurred indoors.  The following is a look at the top statistical performances from the event.  All videos have been uploaded to player profiles, look for in depth reports on every participant, ideally later this week!

TOP PITCHING VELOCITIES

80 – Jake Ferguson, LHP, Lebanon, 2020
80 – Bryce Miller, RHP/OF, Davidson Academy, 2021
80 – Tyler Wiggins, SS/RHP, Lebanon, 2020

- A trio of arms worked up to 80.  Ferguson, a 6’3, 175-pounder, showed a projectable frame and ability to spin an intriguing slurve.  Miller, a 5’11, 160-pounder, had an intriguing BP that may project him best as a position player, but showed feel for a CH.  Wiggins, a 5-10 165-pounder, showed improvements across the board offensively, which help to suggest he profiles best as a middle infielder at the next level.

TOP EXIT VELOCITIES

87 – Jackson Cauthron, C, Siegel, 2021
84 – Chase Birdwell, C, Lebanon 2020
84 – Graham Sansom, OF, Ravenwood, 2020
82 – Brendan Jones, OF, Goodpasture Christian, 2021
82 – Mitch Lanik, OF, Franklin, 2021
82 – Stoney Smith, SS, Greenbrier, 2021

- Cauthron’s powerful lefty stick is well known to this scout and he has seen his exit velocity climb at every successive event, this time leading all hitters at 87, which was a 2-tick increase from the Border Battle last weekend.  A clean-up hitter as a freshman for a team that advanced to the Spring Fling, he continues to show advanced power and a quality approach every time we see him.

TOP OF VELOCITIES

84 – Chase Birdwell, C, Lebanon, 2020
76 – Brendan Jones, OF, Goodpasture Christian, 2021
75 – Gavin Marrero, OF/LHP, Mt. Juliet, 2020

- Birdwell led the OF’s, showing off his raw arm strength, but he projects best behind the plate and will be discussed more on the pop time leaders.  Jones was the 2nd best arm and he pairs that arm with 6.66 60 speed, giving him an intriguing profile in CF as the frame matures.

TOP IF VELOCITIES

83 – Stoney Smith, SS, Greenbrier, 2021
82 – Tyler Wiggins, SS/RHP, Lebanon, 2020
81 – Peyton Oliphant, SS/RHP, Davidson Academy, 2021

- Smith delivered a home run in a big game against Sycamore when we saw them last spring and confirmed with his numbers the intriguing all-around skill-set we observed.  The 5-11, 175-pounder led all infielders w/ his 83 mile per hour arm and paired that with an 82 mile per hour exit velocity.  Having already seen his power in game, it will be interesting to track his development, as he shows the tools to stay on the left side of the infield w/ soft hands and good footwork.

TOP C POP TIMES

1.88-1.94 – Chase Birdwell, C, Lebanon, 2020
2.00-2.03 – Jackson Cauthron, C, Siegel, 2021

- Birdwell is not hard for a scout to notice when they arrive for a Lebanon game, as he jumped out when we saw them play Wilson Central this spring.  As is normal in a showcase setting, he showed a big jump in his pop time from in games, where we clocked him as low as 2.06.  He stood out for his accuracy, putting the throws on the bag.  He features arm strength w/ athleticism and soft hands to profile as an above average receiver.  He also jumped out for his willingness to block the baseball this spring.

TOP 60 TIMES

6.66 – Brendan Jones, OF, Goodpasture Christian, 2021
7.12 – Mitch Lanik, OF, Franklin, 2021
7.25 – Robert Carroll, SS/RHP, Pope John Paul II, 2022
7.25 – Trevon Sneed, OF, Siegel, 2021
7.28 – Gavin Marrero, OF/LHP, Mt. Juliet, 2020

- Jones recorded one of the fastest 60 times we have seen all year and he ran the other 60 at 6.75.  He features plus speed to go with a 5-9,155-pound frame and the 2nd best arm strength we saw on this day, giving an intriguing profile for CF.
