Donny Everett, a freshman right-hander at Vanderbilt and former Clarksville HS, TN, standout, died Thursday. The Tennessean reported Friday morning that emergency crews were dispatched to a drowning at Normandy Lake in Coffee County, southeast of Nashville, around 5 p.m. local time.

Everett missed the first part of the spring with an injury, but had logged 12 innings for the Commodores, allowing six runs (two earned) on 11 hits and five walks. He struck out 13. He had made six appearances, two of which were starts. In high school, Everett earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors after striking out 118 batters in 61 innings and posting a 9-0, 0.91 record. Ranked No. 16 in the 2015 National Top 50, he could have gone in the top two rounds of the draft, but dropped to the Brewers in the 29th because of signability. He had one of the best fastballs in his class, sitting 92-95 mph and reaching the high 90s, even hitting triple digits.

Vanderbilt is scheduled to take on Xavier in NCAA Regional action, but as of Friday morning the game’s status was unclear.
