Game Report: Hendersonville Intrasquad

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Tuesday, Hendersonville played in their first scrimmage of the year.  As would be expected, the pitchers were ahead of the hitters.  To add to the hitters fun, the sun chose to set right behind the CF wall, making it more difficult for hitters to track the baseball as the game went along.  Because we will see Hendersonville again later this spring at the PBR TN/KY Challenge, we will focus on a select number of players, as I expect to see some velocities and swings to develop into the spring.  Here is a look at some standout (check out the Twitter feed for some short video highlights):

Hitters

Brett Coker SS / C / Hendersonville, TN / 2018

Itawamba CC commit.  Getting our first look in game at Coker after he attended the Middle Tennessee Preseason Preview, he had a solid day at the plate, going 2 for 4 w/ a double.  Showed similarly as at Middle Tenn Preview, showcasing barrel feel w/ projectable 6’1, 195-pound frame.  Pull power w/ ability to use all fields.  Defensively, made all the plays at SS, likes to throw on the run from different arm slots.  As frame develops, may grow into a 3Bmen, where arm strength and glove will play.

Gabe Dalton OF / OF / Hendersonville , TN / 2018

First live look at the uncommitted OF and he is currently ranked too low.  6’2, 185-pounder w/ projectable lean frame, some present lower half strength.  Offensively, hits from an open, slightly crouched stance w/ bat rhythm into proper stride and load.  Quick to the ball w/ natural loft, bat-speed.  Gap power now, projects for pull HR power.  Was not tested defensively.  An OF to follow into the spring, tools to have a big senior year.

Austin Mays 2B / SS / Hendersonville, TN / 2018

Uncommitted 2B picked up a couple hits while showing plus run speed.  Undersized frame w/ some lean strength.  Offensively, hits from a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ leg kick and load.  Bat waggle.  Lot of movement in swing.  Singles hitter wants to hit gaps and use his plus speed to leg out extra base hits.  Ran a 4.22 down the line to beat out an infield single.  Was not tested defensively.

Pitchers

Cameron Hansen RHP / 1B / Hendersonville, TN / 2019

Max FB: 90, FB (85-87), CB (71-74), CH (80)

Uncommitted 2019 RHP set a new max FB velocity, touching 90.  Bulldog build w/ close to mature frame.  Pitches from H ¾ release in repeatable delivery w/ some head violence.  FB showed occasional ride through the zone, occasional late arm side run to the glove-side corner.  Same above average CB he showed in the fall, still a true out pitch.  Plus rotation w/ above average depth, late break.  Threw one CH that has taken a step forward from the fall, showing arm-speed w/ fade, throwing his one CH for a strike.  Around the zone on this day, projects to control the zone.  8 swing and misses on 14 swings (57 %).

Hayden Mullins LHP / Hendersonville , TN / 2019

Max FB: 91, FB (87-90), CB (72-75)

The Auburn commit and currently the top ranked 2019 in the class set a new max FB velocity, touching 91.  Athletic build w/ lot of projection remaining, hasn’t scratched the surface of his physical potential.  Pitches in an up-tempo delivery and ¾ to H ¾ release.  Repeated the delivery much better than he did in the brief outing I saw this fall.  Deceptive w/ lot of movement, difficult for hitters to stay focused on the slot.  FB w/ arm-side run.  Gets on you.  CB continues to flash plus, tight rotation w/ above average depth, late break.  True out pitch.  Around the zone, flashed ability to pitch w/ intent w/ both FB and CB.  7 swing and misses on 12 swings (58 %).

Harrison Williams RHP / OF / Hendersonville, TN / 2018

Max FB: 84, FB (81-83), CB (68-70)

Uncommitted 2018 RHP showed intriguing 2-way potential, recording 3 hits offensively as a hitter and touching 84 as a pitcher.  Medium frame w/ present lower half strength.  Pitches from repeatable full wind-up delivery and over the top release.  Some downhill plane.  Straight FB.  Spins a medium downer CB, comes up slightly out of hand, w/ feel for throwing it for strikes.  DNS CH.  Around the zone w/ FB, pounded zone w/ CB (7 of 8 for strikes).  Generated 4 swing and misses on 10 swings.

Offensively, hits from a straight on stance w/ weight on backside and controlled bat waggle.  Toe tap w/ short load.  Near arm bar w/ some stiffness through the zone.  Barrel feel w/ ability to move the baseball in all fields approach.  Some gap power.  Profiles as a corner outfielder w/ arm strength.
