Game Report: Jefferson County @ CAK

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Thursday, Jefferson County traveled to Christian Academy of Knoxville for a scrimmage.  This was a cold day, with temperatures hovering in the low 40’s and involved the occasional snow flurry.  Here is a look at some standouts (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights):

CAK Hitters

Garrett Breeden 2B / SS / CAK, TN / 2018

2B only swung the bat twice on this day, drawing 4 walks.  Short, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into stride and short load.  Repeats the same swing w/ knack for contact.  Tough out.  Shows feel for the bunting game, barrel control to move the baseball.  Showed a reliable glove at 2B.

Cole Campbell 1B / CAK, TN / 2019

First basemen shows power from big frame.  Tall, athletic, high-waisted frame w/ some present strength, extremely projectable.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ bat waggle into leg kick to slightly open w/ short hand load.  Stiff through the zone.  Learning to incorporate legs into swing consistently, get them in sync w/ upper half.  Some power potential as he learns his body and develops some looseness.  Was not tested defensively.

Zane Keener OF / LHP / CAK, TN / 2019

Tennessee commit is a pure hitter.  Short, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick w/ proper load.  Proper bat path w/ above average bat speed through the zone.  Projects to hit for average w/ pull power.  Love the way he takes pitches w/ how he tracks the ball.  Was not tested in CF.  Pitched on this day, working 80-83 w/ feel for 65-68 CB, but future is in the batters box.

Jesse Osborne C / CAK, TN / 2019

Athletic catcher showed arm strength while collecting 2 hits.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, some physical projection remaining.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into shift of weight, toe tap and load.  Comes up slightly out of the crouch in his load.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Learning to keep lower half on line, tendency to leak, swing with all upper body.  Pull oriented approach w/ projectable power.  Defensively, handles a quality high school staff.  Features quiet glove, quality target, feel for pitch framing.  One of the better receivers we have watched thus far this spring, minimal movement behind the plate.  As a thrower, learning how to use lower half efficiently, showing above average arm strength.  Pop times got as low as 2.12, popped a 2.19 in game for a caught stealing.

Austin Jaslove SS / CAK, TN / 2020

SS shows all the tools you look for in a young player.  Medium, athletic frame w/ long limbs, uber projectable.  Offensively, hits in a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ lower hand set-up w/ hand rhythm into mini leg kick and load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Tendency to land heavy on his front leg, developing balance will improve w/ reps.  Projects to hit for average and pull power as frame matures.  Defensively, showed above average hands w/ quality feet, projectable arm strength w/ carry to target.  Moves well laterally.

Connor Jurek 3B / RHP / CAK, TN / 2020

3B picked up a hit and 2 walks while not swinging and missing.  Short, sturdy profile w/ present lower half strength, lot of physical projection remaining in the upper half.  Almost a catcher build.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ quick, short hand rhythm into proper stride and load.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Line drive, gap to gap approach, able to use all fields.  Projectable pull power.  Defensively, showed projectable arm strength at third base w/ solid hands.

CAK Pitchers

Alex Brewer RHP / CAK, TN / 2018

FB (78-81), CB (66-68)

Physical righty shows quick arm, striking out 4 in 2 innings.  Reminds me a lot of Chandler Gant in high school, as he was 81-82 when I saw him his senior year fall and is now 85-87 for Southwest Tennessee as a freshman.  Prototypical pitcher build w/ present strength in the lower half, projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Repeats w/ low effort.  Straight FB shows occasional short arm-side run.  Medium downer CB was inconsistent on this day, flashed proper shape/depth.  Pounded the zone w/ FB’s (17 of 21 for strikes), CB was inconsistent command wise.  An interesting righty who will make a velo jump at some point in this calendar year.

Hunter Loyd RHP / OF / CAK, TN / 2019

FB (86-88, T90), SL (79-80), CH (79)

Righty shows super quick arm, allowing zero hits and striking out 3 over 2 innings.  Tall, athletic, high-waisted w/ some present lower half strength, very projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up into H ¾ release.  Glove tapper before he begins his arm circle.  Settled in during the 2nd inning, repeated delivery much better.  Straight FB flashes short arm side run to his arm-side corner, flashes cut to his glove-side corner.  SL was better in the 2nd inning as well, showing ¾ tilt w/ flashes of depth, tightness.  CH showed arm-speed w/ fade and sink.  Thrower w/ control, projects to command w/ reps.  23 of 31 fastballs for strikes.  Generated 5 swing and misses on 22 swings.

Jefferson County Hitters

Sean Fladd OF / LHP / Jefferson County, TN / 2018

OF shows all-around skillset.  Medium, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits from a slightly open, crouched stance into knee to knee leg kick w/ proper load.  Timing slightly off on this day.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ some loft.  Projects to hit w/ barrel feel.  Projectable pull power.  Also intrigued on the mound, touching 82 from the left side while mixing in a CB w/ proper shape.  An interesting prospect to track, not sure where his future will be based off this look (OF, LHP, 2-way).

Logan Flynn OF / LHP / Jefferson County, TN / 2018

CF made 2 diving catches, including one w/ a full layout to rob extra bases.  Short, athletic frame w/ lean strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short stride and short load.  Line drive oriented, gap to gap approach.  Shows a 2 strike approach.  Above average runner underway.  Above average defensively in CF, covers ground w/ good bat reads, developing arm strength.

Jefferson County Pitchers

Tyler Shaver SS / RHP / Jefferson County, TN / 2018

FB (83-86), CB (70-75), CH (79)

Carson Newman commit shows quality 2 pitch mix, striking out 3 in 2 innings.  Medium, athletic frame w/ some present lower half strength, some physical projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Quick arm.  Repeats.  FB showed consistent arm side run, occasional sink.  Slurve w/ above average depth, flashes tightness.  Projects as a swing and miss pitch.  Spiked the one CH he threw.  Around the zone, timing was slightly off on this day, projects to command.  May end up as a SS as well at the next level, showing quality middle infield tools w/ bat speed, repeatable swing.
