PBRT Alabama Select: Day 1 Scout Blog

Alabama Scouting Staff

The PBRT Alabama Select got kicked off yesterday in Albertville, AL at the beautiful & brand-new Sand Mountain Sports Complex, which features four artificial-turf fields. Although the forecast called for plenty of rain throughout the day, the first day of pool play games across four age divisions (14U, 15U, 16U, 17U) was uninterrupted thanks to the turf fields. Our scouts were on hand for all games played, and there were plenty of standout performances throughout the day, both at the plate and on the mound. Teams and players were well-represented throughout the southeast part of the country, making for a perfect day of baseball.

Before we get cranked up with Day 2 of the tournament, our scouts went back to take a look and highlight some of the top performers on Day 1...

Class of 2021

+ Miles Smith, RHP/SS, Lincoln County (TN), 2021
6-1, 160-pound frame with natural athleticism on the mound. Listed as a primary infielder, but got the start in Game 2 for Dinger Nation 2022 and worked into the 3rd inning before losing command and laboring in the outing. Fastball was consistently 85-87 mph in the first two frames, which were scoreless, with tons of riding life through the zone. Lost the fastball command a bit in the later innings, and found the 76-78 mph slider w/ sharp 10/4 shape after that. Aggressive arm with some intent, had previously been up to 90 mph in the spring.

+ Josh Sanchez, SS, Rossview (TN), 2021
Roane State CC signee. 5-8, 150-pound athletic frame with multiple tools. The recent high school graduate got off to a hot start for Showcase Baseball 17U - Vaughn in the early going. Kicked off the frame early on by using quick hands and driving a fastball the other way into the right center gap for a triple. Displays solid speed on the bases, and made it into 3rd base with ease. Sanchez wrapped things up with a 1-for-2 performance, and also came across to score a pair for his squad. A lot to like in the JUCO signee.

Class of 2022

+ Gattis Henley, SS, Franklin County (TN), 2022
Strong 5-11, 190-pounder that strength scattered throughout the frame. Extra base hit machine for Knights South AL 2022 in their first game of the day, going 2-for-4 with a triple, single and an RBI on the day. Hits out of the three-hole using a balanced setup, keeps the weight back and shoots efficient hand speed through the zone with an uphill plane. Showed ability in second at-bat to turn the barrel quickly and get to an inner-half fastball, lining it to left field for a single. Consistently on the barrel all afternoon in one of the top offensive performances on Day 1.

Class of 2023

+ CJ Bush, OF, Bob Jones (AL), 2023
Athletic 6-0, 180-pound body, but showed some of the physical strides he’s made to the frame in a couple at-bats on Day 1. Reached base in all plate appearances, but one of the biggest swings of the day came on a solo home run to the back side in his second at-bat. Showed some easy pop to the opposite field, using a slightly-crouched setup, and present hand speed through the zone. Has always been known for his athleticism as a 6.84-runner at prior PBR events, and continues to evolve as a prospect in each look.

+ Bryant Hyde, OF, Phil Campbell (AL), 2023
Compact, athletic 5-11, 175-pound frame. Quickly has made a name for himself in the short summer after winning a Class 3A championship with Phil Campbell. Sits at the top of the order, and fits the mold for a leadoff hitter, going a perfect 3-for-3 on the day. On the barrel with each swing, balanced & square setup, keeps the hands inside the baseball through contact. Some present twitch with high level athleticism. Ran a 6.78 laser-timed 60 YD a few days ago at the Alabama All-State Games. Has gained plenty of momentum due to his play this summer, and should continue to rise as a prospect if he continues to swing it at this pace.

+ Carter Wells, 3B/RHP, Sparkman (AL), 2023
Physical 6-2, 185-pound frame. Got things done at both the plate and on the mound for the Huntsville Christian Chargers early this morning. At the dish, Wells delivered a 2-for-3 performance, while driving in an RBI. He showed the ability to work deep into counts and made it tough on opposing pitchers to get an easy out. Displayed a solid two-strike approach and handled the bat with a mature approach, while showing some present pull side pop. Worked a solid 1 ⅓ innings in relief, allowing no runs, no hits, only one walk and a strikeout in his short appearance.

+ Mykell Murrah, RHP/SS, Elkmont (AL), 2023
Athletic 5-9, 160-pound body. Made a quality start on the mound in his outing today for Knights South 16U. Worked at a quick tempo on the bump, logging four innings during his start, while allowing one earned run, on two hits, while also striking out five. Keeping hitters off balance with a FB/BB combo, with the fastball showing some arm-side action at 82-83, 85 mph.  He also ran the FB up to 87 mph at the Alabama All-State Games earlier in the week. Murrah flipped in a few solid breaking balls at 65-69 mph during his appearance today. Also handles the bat well, and is an easy sub-7.00 runner.

Class of 2024

+ Luke Hudson, IF, Springwood, 2024
Thick, physical 5-10, 200-pound frame with advanced strength for his age. Just missed a home run in his second at-bat today for the Alabama Raiders by driving an elevated 3-2 fastball well beyond the head of the left fielder for a two-RBI double to help extend his team's lead in the early going. Displays a direct path to the ball with quick hands. Chance for more power as he continues to grow and fill out his already physical frame.

+ Hayden Hutchins, C/3B, Buckhorn, 2024
Athletic 5-9, 150-pound frame with a simple and strong look at the plate. Produced a pair of loud base knocks in the Knights South 15U win today. Laced a shot back up the middle in his third at-bat, but had nothing to show for. Hutchins displays a slightly-open stance, but doesn’t have any problems using all parts of the field to his advantage. Finished the game 2-for-4 and scored a run in the two-hole of the Knights’ lineup. Was a 7.23-runner at an event last year, and has some potential to continue to progress as he adds to the frame.

Class of 2025

+ Luke Holbrook, RHP/SS, Whitesburg Christian, 2025
Projectable 6-2, 160-pound body with long limbs and some athleticism on the mound. Playing up a couple of grad years with Bulls Baseball 15U, Holbrook showed impressive traits to dream on in the early portion of his outing on the mound. Fastball reached 79 mph in the early innings, while working consistently in the mid-70’s with more on the way, obviously. Had the breaking ball working well off the fastball early on, generating plenty of swing and miss and allowing the heater to tick up a bit. Flashed a promising changeup, but was mostly FB/BB. Some upside on the mound if he continues to develop and grow into his lean frame.
