Preseason All-State Showcase: Corner Infield Analysis

The Preseason All-State Showcase took place on February 7 at Showtime Sports Academy in Franklin and proved to be the most talented group of players we have assembled since we began running events in the state in August.

The following is a look at the corner infielders who participated in the event. This is position player analysis only. Those corner infielders who also pitched at the event has their pitching evaluation featured in a previous article.

Bryce Denton, Ravenwood HS, 2015, R/R, 3B
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound 3B/OF ran a 6.75 60 yard dash time and had a position velocity of the following INF- 89mph, OF- 89 mph, Defensively  Denton showed good arm strength and athletic ability, showed fluid footwork and soft hands, had quick instincts. At the plate Denton had an open setup with a short stride, showed good balance and bat speed, had fluid rhythm and is a power type hitter, had a 98mph exit velocity off of the tee and shows power that projects well at the next level. Big combination of athletic ability, arm strength, and power.

Sean Kearney, Knoxville Catholic HS, 2017, R/R, 3B
The 6-foot, 180-pound 3B ran a 7.40 60 yard dash time and had 76 mph arm strength across the infield, Defensively  Kearney showed soft hands and natural instincts, good body control, has room to get rid of the ball more quickly. At the plate Kearney had a balanced setup with a short stride, has average balance and bat speed, showed an aggressive approach, has a tendency at times to wrap his bat some which lengthens swing, shows some hand quickness and uses lower half well, Kearney had an exit velocity of 78 mph off the tee.

Andy Hale, Spring Hill HS, 2017, L/L, 1B
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound 1B ran a 8.04 60-yard dash time and had a position velocity of 73 mph, Defensively Hale had soft hands and fluid footwork, showed natural instincts and average arm strength. At the plate Hale hit from an open setup with a short stride, showed good balance and good bat speed through the zone, had a good approach and is a line drive type hitter, Hale had an 86mph exit velocity off of the tee. Hale’s bat should continue to improve as he gets stronger and he has good upside offensively with power potential.

Luke Reno, Christian Brothers HS. 2017, R/R, 1B
The 6-foot-4, 173-pound INF/OF ran a 7.62 60 yard dash time and had a position velocities of INF-79mph/OF-83mph, Defensively  Reno showed good footwork and natural instincts, showed good arm strength and long arm action, adequate hands. At the plate Reno hits from a balance setup with a short stride, gets close to arm bar in load creating some length in swing, is a line drive type hitter, showed above average bat speed with 86mph exit velocity off the tee, offensive game should continue to evolve with added physical strength.

Dane Rheinnecker , Knoxville Central HS, 2017, R/R, 3B
The 5-foot-8, 180-pound 3B had a position velocity of 76 mph, Defensively, Rheinecker showed soft hands and good footwork, showed a clean exchange and played through the ball. At the plate Rheinecker hit from a balance setup and had a short stride, showed good balance and average bat speed, had a  83 mph exit velocity of the tee. Rheinecker will continue to develop as he gets stronger and faster.

Andrew Winningham, Franklin HS, 2017, L/R, 3B
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound 1B ran a 7.65 60 yard dash time and had a position velocity of 68 mph, Defensively Winningham showed long arm action and average hands, had natural instincts but needs to improve on getting rid of the ball quicker. At the plate Winningham had a balanced setup with a slight leg kick, showed good balance and average bat speed, short/compact swing, is a line drive type hitter, Winningham had a 76 mph exit velocity off the tee.

Adrian Jones, East Nashville HS, 2016, R/R, 3B
The 5-foot-8, 205-pound 3B ran a 8.36 60-yard dash time and had a position velocity of 75mph, Defensively Jones had average hands and clean exchange, showed heavy footwork and can improve on his quickness, can take better angles to the ball. At the plate Jones hit from a balanced setup and had a short stride, showed average balance and bat speed, gets extended on front foot at times, level swing path with flat finish, line drive type hitter, Jones had an 80mph exit velocity off the tee.

Mason Garcia, Collierville HS, 2017, R/R, 3B
The 6-foot, 215-pound 3B ran a 7.83 60-yard dash time and had a 71mph position velocity, Defensively Garcia had average hands and fluid footwork, showed short arm action, needs to improve on arm strength for the 3B position. At the plate Garcia hit from a balanced setup with a short stride, showed good balance and average bat speed, can be more aggressive and use his size, ball jumped when he squared it up, Garcia had an 80 mph exit velocity off of the tee.
