The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Mustangs were from start to finish one of the best teams in 4A, which resulted in a state runner up finish. They compiled a 39-9 record last Spring with their only in-state losses were to rival Collierville and champion Farragut, who both made significant runs at state. They return a large portion of the key contributors from last season with a balance of youthful and upperclassmen experience. They have great pitching depth and the lineup will be very productive. ‘23 RHP/1B Dean McCalla is one of the top uncommitted arms in the 2023 class and returns as the ace this Spring plus provides some thump in the lineup. The Stangs boast a deep experienced infield with an abundance of talent. ‘25 MINF Ryan Mitchell (Georgia Tech) is the top lefty bat and put together a great freshman campaign while playing 2B. ‘24 MINF Robinson Mitchell (Tennessee) is a consistent bat in the meat of the order and handle duties at SS. ‘23 INF/RHP Tyler Yearwood can play all the infield spots and will play a key role on the mound. ‘23 OF Ryan Bland (NE Miss CC) and ‘24 OF Donovan Mitchell (South Alabama) return in the outfield and can pick up extra base hits in bunches. ‘25 LHP/OF Chandler Day will join that duo in the outfield, but turned in an excellent season on the mound as the no.2 arm. ‘24 RHP Brady Moffitt and ‘24 LHP Scotty Young will both play significant roles on the mound along with ‘25 RHP Owen Waggener. ‘24 OF James Fenton will be another outfielder in the mix, who can provide a lot of speed in his game. The biggest hole to replace from last year will be at catcher with ‘23 Sam Smith and ‘24 C Adam Kidder expected to compete for the job. One freshman to watch is ‘26 1B Collin Bland, who has some big time pop from the left side and can fill in at 1B if needed. They’ll have some youth in some key spots and expect to develop some experience on the mound as the season unfolds. The Mustangs will play a competitive schedule as always and their goals are set on a return to the state tournament while “winning the last game.”
