The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Tigers were very streaky last year finishing up at 23-13 while bowing out in the district tournament. With the new classifications, the Tigers are in the middle of the big four of district 15 (Houston, Collierville, Bartlett, Arlington), which will be a highly competitive league at the top for a very long time. We saw it in year one as two clubs advanced to the state tournament, including Houston’s runner up finish. The positives for the Tigers is they’ve been on the younger side the past few years and they’ll have plenty of experience to push the top two from the past few years. They’ve lack power arms to matchup, but this Spring they’ll return most of their staff and also add ‘24 RHP Eli DeBerry (Memphis Commit). DeBerry looks to step into the ace role after transferring from USJ, and he was up to 90 at the Future Games this summer with a big frame and tight SL. ‘24 RHP Britt Fowler logged a lot of big innings last year and can mix effectively while ‘23 RHP Wyatt Guess (Southwest TN CC) and ‘23 LHP/1B Joe Cowell are another pair of veteran arms they can lean on. ‘24 RHP/SS Jack Hibbard will be an x-factor as he’ll most likely slot in at SS and impressed us this summer with his pitchability and mound upside. Offensively, looks to be a fairly deep lineup, headlined by big bopper ‘24 1B/OF Carter McKay (Memphis commit). McKay might have the best pure power in the state, especially from the left side, and his athleticism could allow him to split time between corner OF and 1B. ‘24 2B/OF Parker Peeler is an athletic bat in the leadoff spot and plays multiple positions.  ‘23 1B JT Maharrey is very hitterish and should be solid protection to McKay in the middle of the order. They have tremendous depth behind the plate with ‘24 C/CINF Jack Pitts and potentially ‘25 C Peyton Goolsby and ‘25 C Tucker Bearden. All are very solid options and it will be an interesting battle to follow this Spring. Overall, the Tigers have a very exciting Spring ahead of them with a very junior heavy group as they’ll look to break into the top two to advance to the region and potentially beyond.
