The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Wildcats had a very solid season as they finished second in district 13 behind rival Rossview and advanced to the Region Semifinals. Unfortunately, they lost to Henry County 1-0 in a lengthy pitching matchup to finish 22-15. This Spring, they return a vast majority of their lineup plus a group of underclassmen that can push for playing time. ‘23 UTL Gavin Dufault (Maryville) will be the veteran amongst the group and can play all over the field. ‘24 SS Preston Brooks and ‘24 3B Parker Frost return on the left side of the infield and played well as sophomores. ‘23 OF Laine Welch has shown good speed and will play a key role in the outfield. ‘23 C Layton Trice returns behind the plate and was very solid all around last Spring. ‘23 1B/OF Carson Sanders (Vol State) has shown big time pop and could platoon with ‘24 1B Briley Hagewood, who has power potential with his lefty bat. The Wildcats boast a high upside group of underclassmen that will provide quality depth behind the returners. ‘ 25 C Korbin Reynolds (Vanderbilt) is the headliner after moving in from Georgia and has shown top notch arm strength. ‘25 OF/RHP Kirk Weatherford played consistently as a freshman and has athleticism to go with his lefty bat. ‘25 OF/RHP Jack Wyatt is a lanky, switch hitter, who really impressed this fall and should play a factor. Then there is a trio of freshmen such as ‘26 RHP Colie Reynolds, ‘26 LHP Porter Murff, and ‘26 UTL Keaton Anderson, who can get some time this season. Obviously, they have plenty of quality options positionally, but the biggest question mark will be the pitching situation after losing a lot from graduation. ‘23 RHP Chip Harris (Vol State) figures to slot in as the ace while ‘23 LHP Hank Miner and ‘24 RHP Brady Davis will trail him. The Wildcats will certainly have a bad taste in their mouth after going 0-4 vs rival Rossview, who figures to be the district favorite again this year. They have the lineup to compete with the top programs, but the depth of their postseason run will hinge on the mound development and production for Coach Brian Hetland’s club.
