The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Yellow Jackets had a very good club last year as they battled it out in district 9 with White House Heritage. They finished runner up in the district tourney, then dropped the Region Semifinal game to Loretto to finish the year 22-16. Looking ahead, they’ll return 7 of 9 from their lineup plus senior-heavy pitching and should project into the top two spots coming out of the district. They’ll lean on the triumvirate of seniors arms in ‘23 SS/RHP Thomas Lankford (Columbia St CC), ‘23 RHP/UTL Brody Mann (Union Univ.), and ‘23 OF/RHP Lane Howell (Walters St CC). All three have been at least mid 80s and will throw crucial district innings while contributing in the lineup as well. ‘23 2B/RHP Kylan Keller figures to be the swing man in the rotation and pairs up the middle with Lankford. ‘23 C Brady Mangrum has been a staple behind the plate and will help this deep pitching staff. ‘23 UTL Khullun Avery and ‘23 OF Aaron Hamlett should figure into the mix and provide even more veteran presence. ‘24 3B/RHP Josh Lee should handle duties at 3B while ‘24 OF/RHP Wendall Billingsley, ‘24 UTL/RHP Peyton Kues, and ‘24 OF/LHP Landon Pack will provide depth. ‘25 C Hut Hargrove will serve in backup role to Mangrum and could get some at bats at DH as a switching hitting bat. They’ll have to be solid on defense, but this upperclass heavy group has the pieces to make a deep postseason run.
