The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Grizzlies had a couple of tough stretches last season as they finished 17-18 and reached the Region Semifinals. However, they can be a dangerous club even though they’ve struggled moving past the Region Semifinals in the past. It all starts with ‘23 RHP/SS Brady Smith (Virginia Tech), who was a Mr. Baseball finalist last year and will be the headliner for the club. Smith will be the ace yet again and will be a big time challenge for any opposing lineup as well as the top hitter and team’s shortstop when he’s not on the mound. Behind Smith, they’ll lean on ‘23 LHP/OF Trevor Johnson to serve as the number two arm and consistently contribute at the plate. ‘23 C Landon Dalton was limited last year by injury, but he’ll return behind the dish and is another lefty bat that could help carry the offensive load. ‘24 UTL Jaxon Maxey will play all over and serve in the leadoff role, who can put pressure on the base paths as well. ‘24 3B/RHP Brayden Christian will handle the hot corner and contribute on the mound in relief or as weekend starter. ‘25 OF Kade Lucas and ‘25 INF Connor May got time as freshmen and will play a bigger role with hopefully more offensive consistency in year two. ‘26 INF/RHP Nolan Wallace and ‘26 INF/LHP Ty Collins are a couple of freshmen that could contribute this Spring as well. The Grizzlies will battle it out with Greeneville and potentially Cherokee for the district spots to advance to the Region. They’ll certainly have the top end pitching and defense to be there in the end with hopes of the offense and pitching depth developing over the course of the year.
