The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

Head coach Jamie Carver and the Cougars are coming off an 10-18 season in 2022 that resulted in a finish at the District Tourney. Coming into the 2023 high school spring season returning seven positional players to go along with six returning arms on the mound, the Cougars look to bounce back and have a productive season. With a solid mix of upper and underclassmen, look for Middle Tennessee Christian to rely on a handful of different guys to get things done both on the mound and at the plate. Some key returning prospects for the Cougars in 2023 include '23 INF Jake Hussain who hit (.414; 12-29) with two doubles, a homerun, nine RBI's, scored seven runs and had an on base percentage (OBP) of (.564), although Hussain misses the second half of the season due to injury, look for him to pick right back up where he left off in 2022. Another piece that the Cougars will look to this spring is '23 OF Drew Owen, Owen finished his 2022 campaign with a (.345; 20-58) batting average, had three doubles, eleven RBI's and scored fifteen runs for the Cougars to go along with a (.465) OBP. Kentucky recruit and '24 RHP/C England Bryan is another top player that the Cougars will depend on in 2023, England collected 27 strikeouts in his 20.1 innings of work last spring and also hit (.311) at the plate. '24 UTL/RHP Brooks Jones, who was a PBR Future Gamer last summer, also hit (.341) for MTCS last season with four home runs. '24 LHP/OF Tyler Casserly also hit (.316) and missed parts of last season due to injury.

With a competitive mix of prospects and if the Cougars can stay healthy in the 2023 high school season, expect for them to make some noise in the D2-A Middle Region.
