The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Knights finished towards the top of district 12 last season, but came up short in the district tournament. They battled back out of the losers bracket, but were eliminated by Ravenwood to finish 21-17. This group does have some experience returning as they made a 2A state tourney appearance in 2021. They’ll have great pitching depth with a bonafide ace, and they’re hopeful they can sharpen up the defense behind those arms. The headliner is ‘23 LHP/1B Ethan McElvain (Vanderbilt) as he’s continued to develop and climbed to the no.1 spot in the 2023 class, which leads to a lot of pro scouts visiting to make evaluations this Spring. Behind McElvain, they’ll have ‘24 RHP/INF Clase Clatur and ‘24 RHP Dylan Ruck, who both threw significant innings last year and are competitive district arms. The infield should be a very strong group as well. ‘23 SS Eric Harper (MTSU) and ‘23 3B Quentin Jenkins (Alabama St) will pair on the left and are both sound defenders and consistent offensive producers. ‘23 2B Deakin Wimmer will fill the other spot and be the double play partner. ‘24 C Tyler Rose returns behind the plate and is a solid defender while managing the pitching staff. ‘24 RHP/INF Dawson Sweeney and ‘24 RHP/1B Tate Riggs expect to have solid roles on the mound and provide more infield depth. Couple underclassmen to keep eyes on will be ‘25 LHP/OF Ryan Stein, ‘26 LHP Bo Holloway, and ‘26 RHP/UTL Evan McElvain. Stein has big two way upside from the left side and Holloway is a highly touted freshman arm that will look to get innings on a deep staff. As always, district 12 will be an absolute battle and Nolensville expects to be towards the top and pushing deep into the offseason.
