The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Toppers were coming off a state title in 2021 and were the top team in their district again as they won the regular season and tournament. They swept through the region play setting up another sub-state matchup with Powell. The game was controversial around TSSAA pitch count rule, but ultimately they lost 4-2 to finish the season with a 35-6 record. This season it will be a fairly new looking group after graduating a large senior class, but they’ll return a decent portion of the lineup. ‘23 SS Jake Bedard will anchor the defense up the middle and has a good lefty bat after an all-district showing last Spring. ‘23 1B/LHP Nate Conner has a good lefty bat and will double as the ace on the mound this Spring. ‘23 C Caden Torraca will be behind the plate and provide some thump in the lineup. ‘24 OF/LHP Landon Smelser is another lefty bat and when lead the outfield while throwing significant innings on the mound. ‘23 RHP Ryan Smith and ‘24 INF/RHP Major Osbolt are expected to have big roles on the mound handling district duties behind Conner. ‘24 MINF Jackson Berry expects to plug in the infield, who is a solid all around prospect. ‘24 OF Josh Marmo is expecting an expanded role this Spring in the outfield plus another lefty bat in the lineup. Underclassmen to watch will be: ‘25 RHP Spencer Taylor, ‘26 RHP/UTL Anderson Craft, ‘26 RHP/INF Hagen Gibson, ‘26 RHP/SS Cole ReSue, ‘26 RHP/3B Nate Stoots, and ‘26 C Aiden Vermillion. The Toppers expect to be an offensive group based on the returnees, but they’ll have to collect pitching depth and experience throughout the season. They’ll be the favorites in district one and given their postseason experience have a chance to make another deep run in 2023.
