The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Smoky Bears turned in an excellent season last year as they won the district regular season and the tournament. They advanced in the region, but dropped a tight one to Science Hill before getting eliminated by Farragut in sub-state to finish the year with a 27-14 record. This season they’ll return a whole stable of arms with frontend guys and high level depth. They’ll have to replace/shuffle a lot of positions defensively to find the right mix this Spring. ‘23 RHP Drew Mattox (Tennessee Tech) and ‘24 LHP/1B Brady Scott return at the top of the rotation while Scott will play a key role in the middle of the lineup. ‘24 RHP/C Bridger Hamilton (Liberty) will anchor the defense behind the plate and provide a switch hitting bat plus throw significant innings on the mound. ‘23 RHP Andrew Moore (Campbell) transferred in over the summer and will play a key role in district relief. ‘24 MINF Mason Ellis will slide over from 2B to SS this year and is an athletic prospect, who will hit at the top of the lineup. ‘23 2B/RHP Ty Koch will pair up the middle with Ellis while ‘25 INF Aiden Gosier and ‘26 INF Hayden Parrish can plug in if needed. ‘26 3B Braden Huffaker has a chance to step in and handle duties at the hot corner in his freshman campaign. Outfield will be the biggest question mark for the Smoky Bears as ‘23 OF Alex Soto will provide a veteran presence and ‘24 OF Knox Kremblas will be coming off an offseason injury after developing into a corner spot last year. ‘24 RHP/OF Christian Hoffman has played a significant role on the mound and may see time in the outfield as well. ‘25 OF/1B Eli Koch and ‘25 OF/1B Isaiah Pappas are a pair of sophomores that could figure in the mix and provide some lefty bats in the order. ‘26 1B Jacob Greene is another freshman that could figure in the mix as a DH-heavy role. The Smoky Bears will battle it out with Jeff-Co again this Spring for the top spot in district two and have the arm to make a deep run as the position group finds their groove. It will be a tough battle as always coming out of East TN, but it has the potential to be a Spring Fling season for Sevier County.
