The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Hawks opened the year at #14 in PBR 4A Rankings and they lived up to the hype. They played a tough schedule and were hot down the stretch while capturing the district and region title. They were eliminated in sub-state to 4A runner up Houston to finish the year 28-14. They’ll return an abundance of pitching and several big time bats in the lineup. ‘23 RHP Cannon Rice (Austin Peay) will serve as the ace and has been up to 90 to lead the staff. ‘23 RHP Reid Leonard was very reliable last Spring and will be a good number two, who is still uncommitted. ‘24 RHP/UTL Hezekiah Scott and ‘23 RHP Lantz Shirk (Maryville) are a pair of mid 80s are that will throw significant innings in the rotation. A for the lineup, ‘24 INF Brady Cooper will be the headliner as he’s got a smooth left stroke in the top of the order. ‘23 C/INF Scotty Dean has showcased some big time tools and athleticism while in the meat of the order. ‘24 OF Brody Prairie is another left bat that came on strong last year and can provide depth on the mound. They’ll have some fresh faces in the mix this year to pair with this veteran trio. ‘25 1B Houston Hebert is a big body that can provide some thump and plug in at 1B. ‘25 2B CJ Lattimore has continued to come along and is a young lefty bat to watch. ‘25 SS/C Caden Slaughter can provide defensive versatility in some key spots. The Hawks are the favorites in district 13 with rival Clarksville being the biggest challenger and they have the pieces to make another deep postseason run with a chance to punch their ticket to the state tourney.
