2018 Area Code Games: Wednesday Notebook

Nathan Rode
National Supervisor

LONG BEACH, CA—At the 2017 Area Code Underclass Games, OF Riley Greene (Hagerty HS, FL) easily stood out as one of the top hitters in the 2019 class. He isn’t out of that conversation, but he also didn’t solidify himself as the top bat at the Tournament of Stars, Team USA 18U Trials or East Coast Pro Showcase. He struck out twice in the Nationals’ first game, but went 2-for-2 with two hard singles and two walks in their second game. On Wednesday, he continued to smash the baseball. In his first at-bat, he squared up an 89 mph fastball with a 98 mph exit velocity on a sacrifice fly. He added another RBI in his second at-bat with a single over shortstop that was 103 off the bat. He squared up another single at 97 off the bat in his third, shooting a ball back up the middle, just left of second base. In his last at-bat, he chopped a groundball through the right side for another RBI single. He’s limited to a corner outfield spot, putting more pressure on his offensive future, but his loose swing and quick hands make him a potential impact bat from the left side.

Here are other highlights from Wednesday’s action…
