2023 Team Preview: Kingwood Mustangs

Brandon Gowins
Texas Scouting Director

The 2023 high school baseball season is underway with practice having started and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Austin at the State Tournament, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and eventually releasing our preseason Top 30 teams in the state.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week and updating the Top 30 teams in the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The 2022 Kingwood team had a solid year, they went 18-12 with a 4th place finish in district and a playoff appearance. The Mustangs return a lot of pieces from last year, and with another year of experience this group could be poised for a deep run.

Offensively, Kingwood returns a lot of their lineup. Sr. C Liam O'Leary is back, which having a veteran catcher always helps. Joining him is Sr. 1B John Herbert, SS Braelon Richardson (South Alabama), the District Newcomer of the year, Josh Arquette, and Sr. OF's Ty Boatright and Sammy Soto.  Also, there are some sophomores that could make make some noise, INF's. Caden Callaway and Brian Schumacher could factor into the mix, along with Braden Fuentes.

On the Mound, John Hebert looks to be their ace and set the tone for the pitching staff.  Joining him is Ian Carlson (NCTC), LHP Landon Morman, RHP Josh Pelfrey (UT-Tyler) and RHP David Ward. They have a veteran staff that should make it tough on the rest of district 21-6A.

Kingwood has the potential for a big season, they have all the ingredients there. Experience, good up the middle, a plethora of quality arms, and they have guys that can change the game with one swing of the bat.  The Mustangs are looking to earn another district title, plus more.
