AUSTIN, TX- We were camped out at UFCU Disch-Falk Field to take in two 4A semi-final games between the Kilgore Bulldogs and the Sweeny Bulldogs in game one, and in game two the Bears of La Vernia would take on the No.1 Argyle Eagles.

In game one both teams would send two committed right-handers to the bump in Texas Tech commit Chase Hampton (No. 140 in the PBR Texas 2020 class, and No. 49 ranked RHP) for Kilgore and UIW commit Jackson Kiddy (No. 67 raked RHP in the 2019 class). Both teams would exchange a run in the first with Sweeny’s coming on an RBI double from Rice commit Quinton Martin (No. 86 in the PBR Texas 2019 class rankings) , and Kilgore would answer with a run on an RBI single from Jayce McFarland (1-1).

Sweeny would tack on another run in the third, after a defensive miscue and some control issues from Hampton would walk in a run giving Sweeny a 2-1 lead. Continued offensive productivity from Martin in the fifth would give Sweeny some breathing room after a two-run RBI double would increase the lead by two (4-1). Sam Houston commit Blake Benavides would drive in one more in the fifth on shot through the left-side of the infield to give the Bulldogs a four-run lead (5-1) heading into the later innings.

Kilgore would fail to manufacture any runs and would fall to Sweeny on a final score of 5-1. Kiddy earns the win for Sweeny in a brilliant pitching performance that allowed only 4H, in 6.2 IP, and punched out 5K.

Final Score: Sweeny 5, Kilgore 1.

La Vernia vs. Argyle

Game two featured another matchup of right-handers in Sam Houston commit Clayton Chadwick and recently uncommitted Chad Ricker (Ranked No. 113 in the PBR Texas 2019 class rankings).

Argyle would strike for a run in the first three innings of play, coming on an RBI single from ACU commit Hayden Clearman, an RBI double from UTRGV commit Preston King in the second, and a sac-fly from Clearman in the third to give Argyle a 3-0 lead.

Chadwick would be able to limit the amount of damage to a minimum of three runs, but after a second time through the Argyle lineup the offensive capability the Eagle lineup possess has the ability to wear down pitchers and can result in Argyle putting up runs in a hurry. Argyle would strike for a whopping 13 runs in the bottom-half of the fourth on nine hits, resulting in a total 16 unanswered runs. Ricker would throw a five-inning shutout in the run-rule victory over La Vernia, allowing four hits, and punching out two.

Final Score: Argyle 16, La Vernia 0.

With the win over La Vernia, Argyle will advance to face Sweeny for a rematch of last years state title game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, Thursday night at 6:30. Likely starters for the state championship game will be Utah commit Sean Bolin for Argyle and for Sweeny Texas A&M commit Caden Homnoik.
