Argyle Eagles Remain Undefeated 30-0

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

The Argyle Eagles clinched the Area Championship with two wins over Aubrey HS (11-1, 6-0) to remain undefeated at 30-0 this past weekend. There are a number of top ranked 4A teams from our Texas Power 25 team rankings, with Argyle currently sitting at No. 4 among all classes and the highest ranked 4A team in the state.

The Eagles’ rotation is experienced and steady, with three strike-throwers, including 2018 RHP Bryson Hudgens (Angelo State), 2019 RHP Sean Bolin (Baylor), and 2018 RHP Parker Abrego (Southern Arkansas).

But it is the Argyle batting order that has drawn most of our attention when seeing them play this spring. There is a dynamic balance of power and speed to go along with a strong nucleus of juniors that have a ton of experience. The Eagles have been in our Power 25 Rankings since the beginning of the season, starting out at No. 19 in the Preseason Poll, then climbing their way up into the top ten in week six, and top five in week nine

After seeing these guys twice this year in person, the way they execute offensively and run the bases can put pressure on the best defense, and put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Not to mention they have a number of left-handed hitters (1 switch hitter) that can equalize any right-hander they face.

On the other side of the ball, their defense is fundamental and athletic. They have high end range in centerfield with 2019 OF Dillon Carter (TCU commit) and one of the biggest sleepers in the 2019 class in RF Hayden Clearman. In the middle infield is 2019 SS Brenden Dixon (Texas commit) and 2019 2B Preston King (UTRGV commit). Dixon is ranked No. 27 in TX, No. 169 Overall, and commands the field from shortstop, and hits in the leadoff spot.

On the corners are 2020 Cade Merka at third base, and 2019 Chad Ricker at first base. Merka is an athletic defender and ranked No. 33 in the TX 2020 Class, No. 231 Overall, while Ricker (a switch-hitter) has played multiple positions in high school and travel ball, and handles the baseball extremely well at first base. Behind the plate is veteran 2019 C Austin King (UTRGV commit). And if they need a pinch hitter, they can always go to switch-hitting sophomore and Houston commit Bo Hogeboom

When you look around the field, you see a lot of players with confidence. To put it simple, these guys can win on the mound, offensively, defensively, and on special teams (base running). If you are a college coach looking for talent, or just a baseball fan, the Eagles are worth the price of admission.

This week Argyle will face of against Melissa High School in a three game set with all games played at Anna HS. Thursday 7:30, Friday 7:30, Saturday 11:00 AM (If Necessary)
